Overview

Ace's second installment of exceptionally smooth soul from Bob Shad's New York-based Mainstream label follows the same contours as its first, running through the same years and duplicating some of the same names. It is a sequel in a sense, offering more of the same while sliding in the occasional twist. In this case, the twist is a few sides licensed from independent Southern soul labels, but a funky simmer like Calvin Arnold's "You'll Do It" slides in nicely among the gossamer grooves and supple ballads offered on the rest of the record. This is generic in the best sense: all of the 23 tracks feature good players and singers working to find something to appeal to the market. They didn't make it -- not only are there no hits here, the names would only be recognizable to aficionados -- but this winds up as a nice pop archaeological artifact, capturing the sound and feel of its satin-draped era. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
