Gr 1-3-Julie accrues $100 to shop for cosmetics that, upon excessive application, cause adults to faint. After she washes her face and removes 36 earrings, everyone revives to exclaim over her beauty. Julie sells the leftover makeup to her friends for $300 and spends most of it on thrift-shop clothes for dress up. Martchenko's comic cartoon watercolors zip with energy and details of this mixed-race family's antics and the imagination of the heroine. Unfortunately, she still is not compelling. From robbing her brother's piggy bank to selling used makeup at a profit to "friends," this girl's obsession with appearance is never explained and her tendency to yell (in capital letters) is grating.-Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
