Gr 5-9-The ostensible purpose of this series is to provide children with role models, but these books fall short of being inspirational tools. The primary problem is that it is difficult to relate the individuals' career successes to the subject at hand. This is particularly true in Male Fitness Stars in the profiles of Bruce Willis and Wesley Snipes, where fitness seems almost tangential. The opening chapter in that title on working out is too sketchy to be useful. While none of the quotations in either volume is attributed, the biographies of martial-arts stars Cynthia Rothrock and Carlos Machado are based on the author's interviews with them. Full-page black-and-white photos show the "fitness stars" being fit. Some of the captions, however, are a tad redundant, such as the one for a photo of Sylvester Stallone holding golf clubs that reads: "Sly relaxes on the golf course wearing a Planet Hollywood shirt." It's hard to say just who would want to read these books.-Tim Wadham, Maricopa County Library District, Phoenix, AZ Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
