Mama is making the family's favorite, and ever-savored, spaghetti sauce in their Manhattan apartment on the twenty-second floor. When she discovers she is short of ingredients, she sends Bradley and his little sister, Mel, down to the street level to fetch some tomatoes from Mr. Miller at his corner market. Upon the elevator's ascent back up home, they find themselves in a frightening situation which is keeping them from getting the tomatoes back to Mama. Bradley is forced to find his bravery and discover his important role as a protective big brother as he and little Mel face a seemingly terrifying catastrophe. Unconditional love ends up being their saving grace.

Beautiful watercolor illustrations and rich, descriptive vocabulary help to create wonderfully visual images as the story of an older brother and younger sister unfolds. Realistic fiction that is appealing to all ages and one that parents and grandparents will enjoy sharing as well. As an added bonus a recipe for using mama's tomatoes is included. Families can cook, making their own special memories. Delightful story! Great for teachers and libraries, too.
With illustrations that are fluid in line and color and a story with exceptional descriptive detail Mama's Tomatoes tells the story of two children during an ordinary day that changes dramatically in the blink of an eye. As the story unfolds the drama of events is backlit by the light of family love. Mama's Tomatoes is a book that any parent or grandparent would enjoy sharing with a child.
Beautifully illustrated and touching story about a child's adventure in much simpler times. Quickly became one of my son's favorite books. I strongly recommend!
