After more than nine years (and counting) of continuous stage performances, the musical Mamma Mia!, featuring songs from the ABBA catalog awkwardly stitched into a romantic comedy plot, was adapted for the big screen by the same producer/director/writer team that had taken it to the theater. (That would be Judy Craymer, Phyllida Lloyd, and Catherine Johnson, respectively.) Like its counterpart, it pleased moviegoers but not critics, and thankfully the film itself is not the primary subject of this consideration. The soundtrack album simply consists of 18 ABBA songs sung by the stars of the movie, most of whom are not professional singers. The instrumental portions of the music are remarkably similar to the original ABBA recordings, which is not surprising given that ABBA member Benny Andersson, who produced this album, reunited the original studio musicians to re-create their parts. Their playing (his, in particular) is a bit less precise here and there three decades on, but for the most part it's hard to tell the difference. On the original recordings, the Swedish singing group revealed its ESL (English as a Second Language) limitations, just as the songwriters (Andersson, fellow member Björn Ulvaeus, and sometimes Stig Anderson) revealed their ESL lyric-writing limitations. Here, the first of those problems is alleviated, while the second is somewhat elided by performers who are actors used to finding ways to say (or sing) even the silliest lines with some conviction. That's all to the good. But the generally low to mediocre quality of the singing is such as to suggest an all-ABBA night in a karaoke bar. The singers may be divided into those who embarrass themselves and those who manage to avoid doing so. In the latter category, the most prominent is Meryl Streep, in the starring role of Donna, an innkeeper living on a Greek isle with her daughter Sophie, who is about to be married and, never having been told who her real father is, sets the plot in motion by writing to three of her mother's ex-boyfriends and inviting them to the wedding. Streep, who has some stage singing experience, is actually better when she's belting than when she has to be more intimate and expressive, as she is called on to do for most of the ballad "The Winner Takes It All." Amanda Seyfried, as Sophie, also does well (and she even gets an extra solo, singing "Thank You for the Music" with only piano accompaniment as the album's hidden track). Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, and Julie Walters are not heard from much, and therefore also fit into the non-embarrassing category. The real problem is Pierce Brosnan, who simply can't sing at all, but who tries hard during such leads as "SOS" and particularly "When All Is Said and Done," to often painful effect. (It's too bad that Christine Baranski, a ringer who has real musical theater chops, only gets to sing "Does Your Mother Know," not only because the album would be improved vastly with more of her, but also because she is so much better than the others that she makes them sound even worse than they are.) Onscreen, just as on-stage, Mamma Mia! is at best a guilty pleasure. On disc, it is no more than a souvenir of the film experience (which didn't keep this album from topping charts all over the world upon its release).

I bought this for my mom since she LOVES the movie! She loves the soundtrack even more and is always listening to it in her car. Any time she goes on a road trip it's the first CD she packs. It's easy to sing along with and fun to listen or dance along to, whether at home or in the car.

Highly recommended for a quick picker upper. You'll be dancing before you know it to the Dancing Queen track. An essential for your car and fun drives.

I love the soundtrack of this fantastic movie! The only thing I would like to have different would have been for the songs on the soundtrack to play in the same order as they were presented in the movie.

I thought the movie was much better than the play and I really enjoyed the stretch for the major mature characters. It was so out of their norm, which made it far more entertaining for me...a 50+ young at heart myself! Drag a fun group of friends and go see it. The words to The Abba songs come to life throughout the movie and more so than when sung/played back in the day. The soundtrack should bring back chuckles and fond moments from the movie. As mentioned, there could have been a few more songs added. It's all lighthearted and I'm glad they made the movie. I'll probably buy the DVD when it's released.

This entire CD is the perfect thing to perk up even your worst day! I think the entire cast did a wonderful job with the music. My mom grew up with the songs of Abba, so it was nice to be able to share this together! This will be a delight for many ages! Don't hesitate to dance in your car!!!

I've been doing professional musicals for the past 17 years of my life, and I can tell anyone honestly, ALL the females in the film version of this musical have fantastic voices!! (The males...not so much. But they give a good effort.) I've been listening to ABBA since I was five years old, and it's so cool to hear those great old songs with a show tune flair!

I haven't seen the Broadway musical, unfortunately, but, I saw the Mamma Mia! movie when it came out, and it was amazing. The cast was wonderful, and they did an amazing job. The music was fun and energetic. I would recommend this soundtrack to anyone who is a fan of ABBA music.

I got this for my daughter's birthday, because she LOVED the movie so much. She sings the songs throughout the day, leafing through the lyric book that came with it and learning the words "just right". My son even gets into some of the songs. I mean, come on, who CAN'T get down to ABBA's "Dancing Queen"? This is a wonderful purchase, and the bonus track that isn't even listed on the CD was a great surprise!!

At first, I thought that the soundtrack album for Mamma Mia would be compiling 16 or 17 ABBA songs from their past albums, get through all the licensing and permission and releasing it. But Benny Andersson did the smart thing with getting the musicians of those great hits together to record them again. The newly recorded songs have some fresh updates without coming off as nostalgic. They're very much brought into 2008 instead of being stuck in the '70s. The rhythms and arrangements sound so crisp and sharp. And having the actors of the film sing them. Meryl Streep is the best singer, but Amanda Seyfried's got some pipes. Pierce Brosnan is okay. The others are fine to average too, but they sounded like they had fun singing the ABBA songs. Standouts include an even funkier Dancing Queen, the fun Mamma Mia, Gimme Gimme Gimme, The Name of the Game, SOS, Our Last Summer &amp quot a new favorite after first listen&amp quot and Take a Chance on Me. This is a good chance for today's audiences so weaned on Jonas Brothers, Lil' Wayne, Miley Cyrus, Keyshia Cole and others to listen to ABBA and their impact on pop music in the '70s. They made dynamic pop records and their songs still hold up today!

The movie was wonderful and so is the soundtrack CD. Who knew Meryl and Pierce could sing so well! I highly recommend both the movie and the CD.

The movie corrects some deficiencies in the stage version, while leaving some others, most notably one of the worst books ever to violate the Broadway stage, at least for a long-running show. Though the movie script is somewhat improved, it still leaves much to be desired. Why on earth did they ever have the same writer for the screen as they did for the stage (Catherine Johnson)?? But really the whole show is just a premise for bringing out the great ABBA songs, so you enjoy the show despite its inherent flaws. It's great to hear the score in the generally capable hands of this cast. We realize once again that Meryl Streep seems incapable of delivering a bad performance she always manages to rise above her material no matter what the circumstances. This movie could be career-enders for a lesser ensemble than the one here (Streep, along with Pierce Brosnan, Christine Baranski, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried, et al.). But it is fun to see them just give into the material and have fun--they look like they are having the time of their lives. The movie also improves upon the visual aspects of the stage production, which half the time looked like the German bunkers defending Normandy during the D-Day invasion. Here we have the stunning Greek seacoast, and gorgeous it is. If only the director hadn't kept the camera moving to a degree that will cause motion sickness in some viewers. The big question with this album is why some songs were eliminated, notably &quot Chiquitita&quot and &quot I Do, I Do, I Do.&quot The latter was also abbreviated in the film almost to the point of eliminating it. Still, this recording is to be recommended for the fine performances and the unbridled exuberance of the musical material. It is almost impossible to resist.

This movie was wonderful. The location that it was shot at was breathtaking. Meryl and the whole cast was entertaining and brought out a side of all of them, that we never would have had the privilege to see without the director's vision. Exception noted: Christine Baranksi's well known broadway background. I loved it. It made me happy and made me forget all about real life. I wanted to turn around, buy another ticket and see it again! You can put it right up there with Grease, Saturday Night Fever, Chicago, etc... A night of ABBA music with a story attached was heavenly for any fan of their music. I'm going right out to buy the soundtrack. If anyone says anything about Pierce's singing voice, then they don't have the vision to understand how a real man with no singing experience would sound. It made the film much more real, and made him even sexier than he already is. Makes you want to imagine your guy or girl singing about their love for you. Very believable and a lot of fun. See it on the big screen so you can enjoy the location. Do NOT wait for DVD. I ABSOLUTELY ADORED IT.

This was a very uplifting movie and the CD has helped to relive every moment. Great job to a cast of people who had fun making this movie.

I Love ABBA. This CD has great songs and they are performed wonderfully. I purchased this two days ago and haven't stopped playing it. The music is so upbeat.

Fun, memorable, and sometimes energizing songs that are great to song along with. The only drawback is that they didn't include "Waterloo" which was in the movie credits.
