Description: This book covers the general concepts of nutrition and human nutritional needs, nutritional therapeutics, and specific recommendations for management of diabetes, obesity, and chronic wasting disease. New updates in this fifth edition include the decision making process in nutrition support and the diets and supplements used in enteral and parenteral support and general clinical practice. The previous edition was published in 2002.
Purpose: This is intended to serve as a central reference for nutritional care in the clinic and tertiary environment. With its concise summaries of the basics of nutrition along with the details of nutritional care, the book accomplishes its goal.
Audience: It is written specifically for health professionals, in particular physicians, dietitians, and nurses responsible for patient care. It assumes readers will have a comprehensive background in human health and disease, but little previous knowledge of nutrition. It will also be of value to those who already have extensive training in nutrition because of the depth of the clinically related material.
Features: All of the 15 chapters are written in the same style and with little overlap. Each chapter includes extensive and detailed headers to help readers locate information. Extensive tables summarize information on nutrients, foods, and vital quantitative detail. Three appendixes set out nutritional formularies, current recommended dietary allowances, and food labels. Finally, a detailed index helps readers locate specific information.
Assessment: This is an excellent healthcare manual for nutritional advice and support. The basic information provides excellent nutritional education while the details on nutritional care are comprehensive. It is a valuable reference for health professionals, spanning wellness to complex nutritional care.
