Many Moods of Moses [VP/Slammin' Vinyl]

"Beenie" means "little" in Jamdown patois, which is what young Moses "Beenie Man" Davis was when he first rocked the microphone at age six. But he's not so little any more; Beenie is one of the biggest stars on the reggae circuit, a magnetic performer who makes ladies swoon with a flash of his megawatt smile. His international hit single, "Who Am I?" (better known by its catchy punch line, "Sim-Simma"), was the party jam of the year, warming up radio waves all through '98 with its thick, tropical bass and wild, sing-a-long lyrics. "Who Am I" may be a bona fide dance hall classic, but the album MANY MOODS OF MOSES doesn't confine itself to one style, leaving Beenie's talent room to sprawl. On "Ain't Gonna Figure It Yet," he delivers a convincing country and western performance, while "Bad Mind Is Active" finds the reggae rapper in Busta-meets-Bobby-Brown mode. Drum and bass masters Sly & Robbie provide a caliente Latin-flavored riddim for the irresistible dance-rocker "Foundation." Guest appearances by Lady Saw and the Shocking Vibes just add to the remarkable, all-over-the-place proceedings. MANY MOODS is one of reggae's great musical journeys, thanks to the manic maestro in the navigator's seat.
