On the recommendation of a good writer, Anna Adler, I picked this book up. My first read by this author and I am so very glad I did. I absolutely love read end of the world apocalypse type stories, it always amazes to see how the human race comes together to survive, with a few bad apples spread around..of course. Instead of a zombie takeover, this series is completely different with another race trying to take over the world, Raptors. A dinosaur type of alien. It was different so very interesting. Hell Squad..a group of very tactical, alpha, bad ass men and women who fight to help survivors stay safe. I enjoyed reading about this militant group because while they are good at what they do, they are only human, they get hurt, sadly they can also die. Always sad to see that when you grow fond of certain characters. Overall it was an enjoyable, fast paced read with funny and colorful characters. The relationship with Marcus and Elle was sexy and explosive. This definitely kept my interest so I am totally looking forward to reading the next book. SR

Ok first I have to admit that I wasn't really sure I would like this series. While I love love love sci-fi movies and shows I generally have trouble with getting into sci-fi books. That being said. I love this series! The characters are so full of life and strength. The dialogue is witty and smart. I loved how flawed and messed up everyone is, yet still strong and touch enough to fight back yet. It makes for great obstacles for the characters to have to over come along with the aliens they have to fight. Now I would be lying if I didn't say that the aliens are a little bit hokey. They are a mixture of different dinosaur/reptilian and human shaped. I wish there was a drawing of them in the books. It would help with picturing them. However they are rather cool sounding and impressively evil wicked buggers. The characters of Marcus and Elle were well rounded and nicely written. I would recommend this book and series to anyone looking for a good alien story to read. Reading order...... - Marcus - Cruz - Gabe - Reed - Roth - Noah ****Gifted ARC copy**** L.

Tags: Sci-Fi Romance, Post Apocalyptic, Aliens, Friends to Lovers, Standalone, No Cliffhanger Marcus Steele was the perfect hero to introduce the story and his team, Squad Six aka Hell Squad. Before the invasion he led a United Coalition Marine Force Recon team. A failed mission to rescue hostages left him plagued with regret and guilt. Despite that tragedy, he got up every day determined to do better. He went out every day without complaint to give any survivors a chance at rebuilding their lives. He was the ultimate leader, putting his group and everyone else before himself. And though he was a bit of a rebel with a reputation for disobeying orders, he was never reckless. Elle Milton used to be shallow, self-absorbed, and a party girl. Her parents hadn’t paid any attention to her, and her almost fiancé just used her as arm candy. Then the aliens came and slaughtered her family while she hid in fear. After that day, Elle became a completely different person. She proved herself by learning as much as she could, and eventually won Marcus’s approval to become Hell Squad’s comms officer. Everyone in Hell Squad seemed to like her, and her interactions with them showed a great camaraderie. I liked her a lot because she was not easily intimidated, she was courageous and a quick-thinker. Marcus and Elle were a great match. Though they’d been attracted to each other since they first met, neither made a move. He thought she was too good for a scarred, rough soldier, and she thought a tough guy like him would never be interested in someone like her. They may have been oblivious to the mutual attraction, but the squad wasn’t. I liked that there was a foundation of friendship, admiration and respect for the romance to build upon. The gradual path in that direction felt natural and not borne just out of lust or opportunity. Marcus was protective of Elle, but it was nice to see him voice his concerns maybe once or twice then drop it. He didn’t coddle her, or go all alpha on her. The moments where he voiced how proud he was of her were actually sweet. There were two pretty hot sex scenes and two short ones that sort of tapered off at the end of a chapter. The best thing about this story was the action and suspense. Hell Squad was constantly on the move. Ms. Hackett did a great job with the world building and action scenes. I had no trouble picturing what was being described (Jurassic World meets Aliens meets Starship Troopers was my first thought). The scenes were descriptive and often bloody, and I’m glad they weren’t glossed over or left up to our imagination. Even though there were quite a few side characters introduced, they were woven into the story seamlessly so the reader wouldn’t have problems remembering them or telling them apart. Some characters were subtly set up for future books. There were five noticeable errors like a missing or misspelt word. Also, nowhere was it mentioned what year the story was set in. If I hadn’t discovered the book trailer, I would never have guessed it was 2120. Also, the United Coalition was mentioned several times, but it was never properly explained. I finally found out in the fourth book. Overall, I’m thoroughly hooked on this series because the plot is exactly what I gravitate towards in this genre.

Overall Rating:  4.25 Rockin Stars Earth as we know it is forever changed and the Hell Squad consisting of a hodgepodge of service males and one female are searching for survivors and a way to defeat the aliens that have invaded their home.   Marcus is the first book in Anna Hackett's Hell Squad series and I happened upon it by accident.  This is an unusual twist on an action pack science fiction romance.  The aliens are humanoid dinosaurs with intelligence and weapons that have destroyed almost all of humankind.  Marcus and Elle are part of an elite group of warriors facing an impossible task. Marcus is an alpha through and through, and Elle was a social butterfly before the invasion.  Now Marcus leads his squad rescuing survivors and Elle is his team's communication specialist.  From the moment he found her, he was drawn to her, but didn't believe a battle scarred warrior was good enough for her and he kept his distance.  When she is sent on a mission with the team he realizes so many things could have happened and the budding relationship begins.  There are many obstacles for the couple and their future is uncertain.  Will love conquer all? Entertaining and fantastic storyline that draws you into the angst, drama and uncertainty war creates even though the characters are fighting aliens from outer space.  This is a well written book and I look forward to the next one in the series.

This is a deceptively short story. But it packs a mighty wallop!!!  There are sexy alpha-male soldiers, who are at home with having females on their team, who are just as kick ass as them, if not more.  Sci-fi thriller meets romance in a tightly woven package.  Set in futuristic Australia after an invasion of reptilian aliens has blasted most life from the planet. A team of special ops soldiers,  civilians and techs band together to rid the planet the best they can of the invaders. Elle, a former party girl, is now the Hell Squad comms officer, and she is damn good at her job. She has a bit of a crush on Marcus,  the squad leader and wants to show that she is no longer that shallow, vapid girl she once was made to be.  Marcus and Elle have been denying their feelings for one another. There are sexy scenes but not in depth and mostly happen off camera as it were. I highly recommend this novel especially if you're into sci-fi romance.  I can't wait for the next book!!!

I must say, when you download a free book on Nook, you never know what you are going to get. It could either be such a typo mess that you refuse to read page 2, or it could be something that snags your attention right away and you can't stop reading until you are finished. This book was the later. I wasn't sure I would enjoy an alien invasion type story, but this one was very well written and the cast is lovable. I even feel Gabe's pain also. I am eager to read the next book in the series. This mysterious hunter chick has me intrigued!
