“The story takes readers on a realistic journey, which concludes when Maria gets her cast removed. It also introduces educational elements, including anatomical terms…Guile’s (Bear Picks a Pumpkin, 2018, etc.) top-notch illustrations are charming and colorful, with diverse characters. They emphasize friendly faces, which will be particularly encouraging to young patients in similar circumstances.
A wonderful resource to help prepare children for medical intervention after an injury.” — KIRKUS REVIEW

Our 8 and 10 year old boys love this book. It is an honest , accurate and informative story and it is beautifully illustrated. The story is about Maria who plays with her younger brother and falls of the couch, breaking her arm bones. Maria is very brave and she understands that everybody who sees her at the hospital is there to help. She also learns about the procedures and words the doctors, nurses and cast technicians use when fixing fractures. It is hard not to fall in love with the characters who are so genuine and real. In short, Maria's Marvelous Bones is a beautiful book that every kid and adult should read.
What an exciting read for my family. All 4 of my children really enjoyed reading this book or having this read to them. They are ages infant to age 9. Maria's Marvelous Bones tells the all-too-familiar story of a young girl who breaks her arm and her adventure as she goes through the steps of diagnosis and treatment. Every family either knows or has someone who has broken a bone, and this book appropriately tells kids what to expect and details all the steps to help alleviate any fears or anxiety in a fun, educational way. This book is a must have for every household with kids and should be a part of every school library. I have ordered 4 more copies to give to friends as gifts as it is so relevant to so many people. Dr. Kollias is the author, who herself is also a bone surgeon; this makes the story even more special as it is about her daughter and her very own job specialty, close to home.
A gentle and warm story about the medical team caring for a child with broken bones that is so comforting and reassuring for both children and parents. Very well written. Our children were captivated by the story and the excellent illustrations. Highly recommended!
My kids thoroughly enjoyed this book and asked me to read it to them again. It’s a great book to read for a little someone who has an injury in helping to ease any anxieties during the hospital visit. Educational and fun.
