The terms like ESD-1 and ESD-2 are very familiar to all involved in hydrocarbon oil and gas industry. General notion is that ESD-1 is a higher level shutdown and if ESD-1 is actuated it generally cascades down to initiate ESD-2. The reverse is not the case i.e. ESD-2 if actuated, it does not trigger ESD-1 in turn. This is the normal hierarcial concept generally followed throughout the oil and gas indutry. However, Marine Loading Terminal design is very special, where we observe apparent anomaly to the conventional concepts of emergency shutdown and nomenclature rules. This book highlights one such case which is very interesting and important for the process safety and design engineers.
