Overview

Martha Washington: An American Life by Patricia Brady

With this revelatory and painstakingly researched book, Martha Washington, the invisible woman of American history, at last gets the biography she deserves. In place of the domestic frump of popular imagination, Patricia Brady resurrects the wealthy, attractive, and vivacious young widow who captivated the youthful George Washington. Here are the able landowner, the indomitable patriot (who faithfully joined her husband each winter at Valley Forge), and the shrewd diplomat and emotional mainstay. And even as it brings Martha Washington into sharper and more accurate focus, this sterling life sheds light on her marriage, her society, and the precedents she established for future First Ladies.

What a fascinating and much needed book Ms. Brady has given us. I started reading the book early on a Saturday morning and was still reading it in the wee hours of Sunday morning. Once I began it, I could not put it down. The author really gives us insight into the 'real' Martha. I have always admired our first First Lady and am so pleased that someone has finally written a book that does her justice. Martha was such an intelligent woman and a true success in her own right, even without George!

I loved this book!! I bought it after visiting Mount Vernon and it really brought the Washington's to life for me. If you think your life is difficult ladies, read this book for a look at life when it was really challenging. Martha was a strong, positive woman. This did not feel like a text book of history.

Martha Washington burned most of her personal letters so there is little we know about her however, this author does a great job with this biography. It is not boring and for anyone interested in Martha Washington, it is definitely worth it. I also liked the pictures in the book.

This well researched and well written book is perfect for anyone interested in learning more about George Washington's better half. Martha Washington is a remarkable figure in American history, and with this book, her story is told.

Any biographer of Martha Washington is at a distinct disadvantage since she destroyed all her personal letters. Despite other reviews that claimed this biography cast a new light on Martha Washington I did not find it to be so. She does not come off here as much more than I would have imagined; a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
