Overview

Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues: Taj Mahal

Multi-instrumentalist and singer Taj Mahal’s career spans more than 40 years, making a compilation a real challenge. But this focused set doesn’t even try to catch every hue and nuance of his career. Instead the CD is a concentration of Mahal’s classic blues and folk interpretations. “Leaving Trunk,” “Six Days on the Road,” and “Dust My Broom” are electric and driving, while “Corrina” and “She Caught the Katy (and Left Me a Mule to Ride)” are acoustic and folky. From Mahal’s more obscure repertoire is the Chicago-sounding “Checkin’ Up on My Baby” which pays tribute to the Windy City blues but also has the immediacy that he is almost always able to conjure up. A live, solo rendition of “Bound to Love Me Some” evokes the '60s performances of John Lee Hooker, Mississippi John Hurt, and a host of other blues men at the Café a Go-Go. This was the first time many New Yorkers had heard these performers live, and the sounds moved through the air with the power of a blues baptism.
