For 75 years the Marvel Superheroes have delighted readers with their larger-than-life, yet very human, heroics. More than simply comic book characters, the likes of Captain America, the Silver Surfer, Iron Man, and Doctor Strange, to name a few, have become part of the fabric of 20th century culture; the mythology of the modern age.

Marvel: The Characters and Their Universe examines these legendary characters, focusing on their creation and charting their continuous evolution in the comic book pages as well as their translation into the world of media, film, television, animation, even video games and theme park attractions, and into the very core of popular culture.

This lavishly illustrated volume features full color artwork and hundreds of photos from film and television productions, some of which have never before been published. Through revealing and entertaining interviews with the legendary creators of the Marvel Universe, including Joe Simon, John Romita, John Buscema, Gene Colan, Roy Thomas, Chris Claremont and, of course, Stan The Man Lee, as well as such cinematic translators as animator Ralph Bakshi, director Kenneth Johnson and actor Lou Ferrigno, Marvel: The Characters and Their Universe reveals the story of Marvel, and its influence on the culture of our time, as never before.

Saw this accidentally during a visit to BN on 5th Avenue and I am extremely glad. It offers the Marvel universe to readers with extensive detailing. A must-have for fans of Marvel. Just an end note, the cover is also extremely tempting.

I got this as a gift to my son-in-law who is a graphic artist. He loves DC and Marvel and is a huge fan of Batman. He loved this book. It was hard to find something he didn't already have. So I was very pleased I found this, and so was he.

Wow..did this take me back!! This book is an incredible look at the Marvel Universe, the characters, and how they have been used and depicted throughout the years. It discusses their use in comics, books, tv, movies, games..even theme parks!! You really learn a lot of new things about these characters and the Marvel company itself. It's a great read and a valuable reference book that I've gone back to on a number of occasions to verify facts. Whether you're new to these characters or an experienced Comicon fan'll love this book!

I just purchased the book, and I love it as a almost 30 something it was great to see some of the hero's I grew up with and how they've changed into hero's my children are comming to love. The metamophisis from early 80's "cheesy" comics we all love to the slick muscled hero's of today...who say's you got grow old gracefully these hero's are climbng the age charts and kick'n more butt than ever.
