In this era of electronic music, where practically every subgenre has half a dozen subgenres of its own (and most of 'em are meant to be cranked at ear-splitting volumes while ravers dance their asses off), a down-tempo album like this is an increasing rarity. As the title would appear to indicate, Mashed Mellow Grooves, Vol. 3: Ibiza
is more of a chill-out album than an amped-up one, eschewing the frenetic tempos of acid house and drum'n'bass in favor of the laconic grooves of ambient techno, dub, and trip-hop. With 18 atmospheric tracks spread across two CDs, the emphasis here is more on setting a cohesive mood than on individual songs, with one track bleeding into the next so seamlessly you might not notice. But in this case, that's not necessarily a bad thing, as artists ranging from heavyweights like Thievery Corporation
to lesser-known talents like Quaid craft dreamy, textural tracks perfectly suited for late-night listening. These songs may have a good beat, but you won't necessarily wanna get up off the couch to dance to it.
