Masquerade (Scandalous Ballroom Encounters, #1) by Victoria Vale

Margaret Seymour is bored by the stifling constraints of society dictating her behavior as a debutante in search of a husband. Her prospects are promising by the standards of London society, yet, not one of them causes her heart to flutter, or her head to fill with scintillating, forbidden fantasies. Those feelings are reserved for Camden Rycroft, Duke of Avonleah—a man who isn’t even aware of her existence.

While attending a scandalous Vauxhall Gardens masquerade, Margaret finds herself in the duke’s arms. His promise of a night of pleasure is tempting, but is it worth it when Avonleah is a known rake notorious for his short attention span and avoidance of marriage?

Camden Rycroft is intrigued by the masked vixen he encounters in the Gardens. After one night with her leaves him hungry for more, his desire for her turns into a fiery obsession. Despite the scandal that could ensue from their affair, he finds himself unable to extract himself from a situation destined to end in pain. When faced with losing Margaret to a potential husband, will he rise to the occasion, or risk living without her?

This novella would have to improve exponentially to even be considered merely stupid. The setting is London in the year 1815. Lady Seymour, Maggie, is in the midst of her debut. Typical of the the times, she is a virgin who has always been shielded by parents, nannies, and chaperones. Duke Studly MacStudmuffin is the lust/love interest. Somehow, one evening, even though she is barely aware she even has genitals, Maggie is able to have a VERY detailed fantasy about what she would like to do with Duke Studly. When, soon after, fantasies become reality, well, my goodness, she is a natural! Professionally trained courtesans have nothing on Lady Maggie! What makes it even more ridiculous is the fact that all the nookie related vernacular is from the 20th and 21st centuries. Besides being a nookie savant, she's psychic! As if all this weren't ridiculous enough, this novella is poorly written from a technical standpoint, too. If your going to write a period-specific book, research it properly. The grammar is poor. There are numerous spelling and vocabulary errors. Consider this review a public sevice announcement. WARNING: this novella may lower your I.Q.!

This author cannot make up her mind, whether she wants to write about sex or a historical romance books. Writing about a duke or an earl does not make it a historical romance book. I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt but I had to skim through all the classless sex conversations and scenes. There's no story here, just sex. A total waste of time.

4 out of 5 stars! This is Maggie’s (Margaret) first season and though she longs to be the daring lady to win Camden the Duke of Avonleah’s attention. Yet, being a debutante means she is restricted by her mother’s wants/desires and the rules of the ton. So, with the assistance of her older cousin, she dresses up seductively masked and sneaks out to the masquerade at Vauxhall Gardens in which she happily captures Camden’s attention. Soon they set out on a most illicit affair that would certainly ruin her if it became known, yet they are drawn together, and both struggle to stay within society’s standards. As the season’s end draws near they realize their affair’s ending is coming soon too. Will Maggie be able to accept another man’s proposal after everything she shared with Camden or will she demand for more? Readers will be swept away in this erotic bliss of a novel. Enticing, exciting, adventurous with an innocent’s edge, if you are looking for that sort of book this is the one for you! I appreciate the way this novel handled the intricacies of society life while a true fun erotica and a romance all in one. Maggie is a fun character, sweet yet daring, understands her position in life but willing to take a chance. I found her very cool. Then throw Camden at her and WOW, the words burn off the pages because of the passion between them. I really enjoyed how they shared more than just their passionate play with each other as it gave their novel more substance. Plus, it didn’t hurt that Camden held my attention because of his possessive ways. I finished the book a half hour ago and I’m still burning up. I recommend this novel to anyone looking for a historical romantic erotica!! Review By: From Me to You ...
