About the Author

Hal Counihan was born in Savannah, Georgia, where the maternal line of his family has lived for many generations. His great-grandfather, Edward J. Thomas, is the author of Memoirs of a Southerner, a personal reflection on his life before, during and after the Civil War.

Hal Counihan holds a Ph.D. degree in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has written about and taught southern history to both college undergraduates and university graduate students.

Master of Providence, his first work of fiction, blends historical imagination with scholarship in exploring one man's experience with the defining reality of the ante-bellum South: slavery.

Hal Counihan, his wife Fran and three Shetland Sheepdogs live in Maryland.
