This is a large format book with an excellent if small selection of images from America's greatest and bloodiest conflict. The Civil War is so distant in time, it seems strange that the last of its veterans died after my own birth. Brady's work made him a legend, but after the war he went bankrupt and his vast library of images was dispersed or destroyed. A similar fate befell other Civil War era photographers.
