Maxinquaye, Tricky's 1995 debut, is deeply revered yet rarely imitated. Its dark brooding sound is not uncommon, but its roots trace more effectively to Tricky's first group, Massive Attack, than to his solo work. The rapper (nee Adrian Thaws) was first heard on Massive's Blue Lines, then he tired of their famously slow working pace, and left in 1994 to work on his own material. Since then he has released three highly acclaimed CDs including Pre-Millennium Tension and Angels with Dirty Faces, and a couple of noteworthy side projects, Nearly God and Grassroots. Maxinquaye made it's impact both for its noir-ish sonics and, more importantly, its deep, introspective lyrics. Tricky took hip-hop's realness and one-upped it. For him, "real" meant a mix of the usual confidence, insolence, and pride as well as fear, anxiety, and self-loathing. The contrast of Tricky's low raspy rapping and Martina Topley-Bird's soulful singing heightens those tensions. Through greater introspection and revelation than most rappers, Tricky gets closer to the truth -- even if he's not so sure that's a good thing.

This is a very unique album. It seems dark and angry, yet at the same time it feels calm and soothing. When I listen to it, I can just tell that this is the work of a musical genius. Standout tracks are: "Overcome," "Hell is Round The Corner," "Aftermath," and "Suffocated Love."
