In the hood, Shorty is a generic term of flirtation for young women. One such woman is Chelsea French, born and raised Detroiter. She is stereotypically ghetto all the way to her low-paying job, propensity for fighting and pregnancy by a man doing fifteen years in jail. Her brother Carter is the exact opposite. He's a police detective and proud suburbanite. He finds her lack of ambition frustrating. She has a photographic memory. He does not.

When Chelsea accidentally solves two crimes, her best friend Snap is convinced that Chelsea missed her calling and talks her into a little urban sleuthing. But as much as Carter wants to see Chelsea do something better, he might not be ready to see her do something better than him.

Maybe Shorty Should Be A Detective is the story of a young woman who has the gift but not the ambition. She's an unlikely crime fighter not quite ready to meet her full potential, still very much fazed by colloquialisms like 'hoodrat' and 'ghetto girl.' If Chelsea wants to be more, she's going to have to learn how to silence the voice of her naysayers.

Stakes in the hood are high. Chelsea has to catch on quick.
