Unwrapping the "King of Cool" and his Collection of Wheels It is no secret that actor Steve McQueen had a strong connection to cars, bikes, and everything else that went "vroom." His link to a variety of beautiful vehicles transcends his work, which includes a motorcycle race in "The Great Escape". In "McQueen's Machines: The Cars and Bikes of a Hollywood Icon", Matt Stone explores this "actor and cult hero of intergalactic proportion" and his relationships with the vehicles around him. This book contains spectacular photos of cars, motorcycles, and airplanes that McQueen owned and drove. These include a 1958 Porsche Speedster used for racing, 1963 Ferrari 250 Lusso. In fact, many of these unique photos come from a family archive, and the captions include intriguing details about his amateur racing career and even stunt work in films. While the book is not necessarily a chronological history of McQueen's life, along the lines of Marshal Terrill's Steve McQueen: A Tribute to the King of Cool, this book still offers an intriguing look at the actor. Chad McQueen, Steve's son, also offers a powerful look at the man, revealing plenty of unique information. Some people have expressed that Stone's book is too quick, providing merely a rundown of each car, and that there are not many complete anecdotes about the actor. If you want more of a narrative, I would suggest that people check out Harley-Davidson Racing, 1934-1986. Ultimately, this is more of a coffee table book that fans of McQueen will as a perfect gift. I do think its a great book about the "King of Cool."

I worked for the insurance agency that insured Steve's personal & business insurances.I handled the account & he kept me jumping with all the vehicle changes. At Solar,he built fibrelass gas tanks for Kawasaki 500 Mach 1 motorcycles & dune buggies. He had an deal with Chevy that allowed him to go into Chevy dealers & get any vehicle he wanted. One Sunday I read in the L.A. Times Sunday supplement that he had acquired an old U.S. Army half track. That's how I found out that I had to add another vehicle to his fleet. He was a character, but the nicest guy.
