Overview

Me, Hailey by Sheri Plucker, Todd Fargo

A girl with glasses dashes to the front of the classroom on her first day of school and yells, "Me, Hailey!" Hailey shares her smile, enthusiasm, and personality with her new friends throughout the day - but can't keep track of her glasses. Soon, the classmates realize that Hailey may look, act, and learn differently, but she's special just like them. "Me, Hailey" opens the door for important questions children may have about Down syndrome.

This book does an outstanding job of showing the delightful nature of a small girl with Down syndrome as she meets other children on the first day of kindergarten. Her classmates discover that they can help and learn from her as they appreciate Hailey's differences. This book will charm those of us privileged to know a Down syndrome person, and educate those who may be put off by differences in a child with this condition. Ms. Plucker writes with understanding, wisdom and, best of all, a delightful sense of humor about this likeable child in 'Me Hailey.'

The important book by Sheri Plucker entitled, 'Me, Hailey!' is the best one I have ever encountered on the subject of children understanding and accepting a Down syndrome child. As a retired teacher of thirty years experience teaching Kindergarten and Second Grade, I know how important it is for books like this one to be conversation starters in the classroom. Sheri Plucker answers many questions children may have in her book yet keeps an interesting storyline moving right along. We are all indebted to Mrs. Plucker for sharing her passion for special children with us. This book is a 'must need' for every elementary library!

Through this book children might be more sensitive to the needs of special children with Down syndrome. It also helps them notice the little things they can do to help others. It is a great book to read to young children. Highly recommended
