'Kit! Kathy is in the top of the hemlock! 'Yes, I know. Don't scare her. She doesn't know that it's dangerous.' That exchange between a concerned neighbor and a small girl's mother offers a telling glimpse into the childhood Katharine Hepburn's parents gave her. Being adventurous - physically as well as intellectually - was simply expected. No one should pick this book up expecting a conventionally structured, conventionally worded autobiography. Miss Hepburn tells her life's stories as if her readers were sitting down for a visit. She moves through her long life in approximately linear fashion, but she never sticks to a timeline when doing that would keep her thoughts from flowing freely. She's frank without being vulgar, and she describes her own behavior - including those times when it was less than admirable - in forthright, honest terms. An interesting look into the mind and heart of one very interesting person.

This book gives good insight into who and what Katharine Hepburn was. It is written as though she is speaking to you. Highly recommend

This is a great book. Such a powerful woman. She reminds me of the kind of woman my grandmother was. So out spoken and adventurous.

A wonderful, very entertaining look at the life of the greatest actress to ever live. She was a very strong, independent woman with such class. There will never be another like Katherine. This book is a must read.

Katharine Hepburn tells the story of her illustrious life from her childhood to the age of 80. She takes the reader along for a ride as we see what shaped her life. Her panache and determination served her graciously as she shares her close family ties to her parents and siblings, her days in college at Bryn Mawr, her early acting roles in plays and then movies as she acquired high acclaim, Academy Awards and fame. She gradually brings us down the ladder of her success as she looks back and reflects on some of the highlights of her life. She adds pictures of some special people who touched her life and supported her in making her dreams come true. She ends her tale by devoting time to her beloved Spence. Spencer Tracy seems to have been the only person who drew out her selflessness. With him, it was not all about her, but more about making him as comfortable as possible. This is a story of a remarkable life that only Katharine could tell with such alacrity.

It's like listening to Katherine Hepburn speak. Story after story, jumping from topic to topic. It really is like listening to an older person tell their stories. Overall it was a good history of old Hollywood, but finding the point of some of the stories was a chore.

I am recommending this but I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I wanted more of her personality and didn't feel that. Somehow her humor didn't come through in the book. Sad because she was a very interesting woman.
