Overview

If you thought Jonathan Richman's turn as the warbling chorus of THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY was a bit of quirky inspiration, wait till you hear this. Eight of the 15 tracks on the soundtrack to the Farrelly brothers' multiple-personality romp ME, MYSELF & IRENE are classic Steely Dan tunes, covered by members of the alt-pop glitterati. Smash Mouth turn in a Fender Rhodes-fueled version of "Do It Again," while the Brian Setzer Orchestra work "Bodhisattva" into a revved-up, nouveau rockabilly swing. Ivy, who also appeared on the MARY soundtrack, bring their hip savoir-faire to the lounge jazz of "Only a Fool Would Say That." Best of all is a reverent "Barrytown" from the piano-driven Ben Folds Five, delivered with some of the signature Becker and Fagen flair. Add new music from the Foo Fighters (the roller-coaster rock track "Breakout"), the Offspring (the crusher punk-pop "Totalimmortal"), and Hootie & the Blowfish (the ambling "Can't Find the Time to Tell You"), and you've got a soundtrack as engaging and entertaining as the film itself.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stacia Proefrock
Like the movie, this album is not likely to become a classic, however, some fun songs are included from pop superstars like the Foo Fighters, Offspring, Third Eye Blind, Smashmouth, Better Than Ezra, and more, playing new music as well as some classic Steely Dan tracks.
