The second edition of Mechanical Ventilation is an excellent introductory text for students of critical care, particularly respiratory therapists, critical care nurses who wish to expand their understanding of mechanical ventilation, and the busy academic provider who needs a quick reference on the fundamentals of mechanical ventilation for board review or from which to generate core teaching materials for trainees. Its greatest strengths are its choice of material, its figures and tables, and its concise, understandable reviews of complex technical aspects of mechanical ventilation, pulmonary physiology, and the potentially confusing literature on clinical applications. This book will become part of our core reading for residency training, and I highly recommended it.

This is the first edition of a softbound textbook in which both the technical and clinical aspects of mechanical ventilation are described. This is a comprehensive textbook on engineering issues, physiologic principles, patient management strategies, and variables affecting outcome of patients receiving mechanical ventilation. Trainees and practitioners of critical care medicine are an appropriate audience for this work. Contributors include international authorities on mechanical ventilation for many chapters with other material contributed by practitioners at Duke University Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati. Twenty-nine chapters with some concluding case studies are included in the 500 pages of this softbound textbook. General content is divided into five sections beginning with technical aspects of mechanical ventilation such as classification of ventilators and modes of ventilator operation. In other sections contributors describe the physiology of patient ventilator interaction and application of mechanical ventilation in specific clinical situations. Chapters are concise and clearly written with ample utilization of tables, line drawings, and figures. The quality of black-and-white illustrations is generally good. Where x-rays are used, they reproduce with adequate quality. Each chapter contains an ample reference list of primary work including key contributions. References date to within three to five years of the date of publication. The table of contents has a grouping of chapters according to section and author names. A concluding subject index includes separate citations for illustrations and tables. This is a worthy addition to the bookshelf of theserious practitioner and the intensive care unit where advanced respiratory care is provided. The important contribution of this work is combined discussion on technical and clinical aspects of mechanical ventilation. Frequently, this mix of information is not included in texts widely read by clinicians.
