The delivery of health care has been revolutionized since the previous edition of The Medical Assistant: Administrative and Clinical, and this eighth edition recognizes these changes. The newly developed AAMA Entry-Level Medical Assisting Curriculum with its content and competency guidelines, has been incorporated in each chapter as the authors strive to maintain the student-friendly level of presentation that has been the hallmark of the text since its inception in 1956.
Unit I guides the student through the basics, beginning with professionalism, education, and the history from which modern medicine has evolved. Unit II addresses in detail the procedural steps in performing the administrative functions in a medical facility, from the role of the receptionist to the responsibilities of office management. Unit III, Clinical Medical Assisting, begins with the philosophy that health assessment forms the foundation of all clinical care. Each chapter embraces a dual focus, based on the art of medical assisting and the science of caring. Each chapter uses one body system as its theme, emphasizing the anatomy and physiology of the system, possible diseases and disorders to be aware of, and the skills needed to assist in the examination and treatment of that particular system.
Many pedagogical features are included to enhance the learning process. Outstanding photographs and drawings highlight administrative skills, including scheduling, financial managing, and organizing of the office, and clinical assisting, which includes techniques and procedures, anatomy and physiology, and normal and abnormal findings. Each chapter opens with an outline of the chapter, introducing the material to be learned, a vocabulary with definitions, including the terminology used in the chapter, and learning objectives, targeting the main areas in each chapter to master.
As we enter the new millennium, the entire health care system is facing multiple changes in techniques, patient involvement, and the health care delivery system. The eighth edition of The Medical Assistant: Administrative and Clinical forms the foundations to meet these challenges. From cover to cover our focus has been on the advances in the technology of equipment ad educational methodology as well as an emphasis on new medical achievements and procedures.
