This book has been produced to replace 'Medical Disorders in Obstetric Practice'. In many ways Cyril Barnes establish the sub specialty of obstetric medicine in Great Britain. Some would argue that obstetric medicine is not a sub specialty at all; that the already established subspecialties, such as cardiology and hematology, embrace a sufficient body of knowledge to deal adequately with all medical complications of pregnancy. I disagree. The physiology of the pregnant woman is so altered, and the constraint of the welfare of the fetus is so important, the subspecialists who can oversee the two widely different fields of obstetrics and medicine are needed.
