Meg is new in town. She watches the children at the playground, but they pay no attention to her. At school she keeps to herself too, while her classmates work and play together. "If only I had a friend!" she tells her mother one night. Mother tells Meg to be patient. "It's August, " says Mother. "And in August there are lots of shooting stars. If you see one, make a wish before it burns out. Then it will come true."
Meg watches the sky every night, but something always goes wrong. How Meg's wish comes true not exactly in the way she'd planned is a reassuring story that will help other shy children make friends of their own.
