Overview

Kyon is your ordinary high school freshman who has long given up on his childhood dreams of encountering the fantastic and supernatural...or so he thought. From the very first day of school, his classmate-the beautiful but eccentric Haruhi Suzumiya-makes it very clear that her only desire is to meet aliens, time travelers, and psychics! A chance conversation between the two inspires Haruhi to form the SOS Brigade, a school club created for the sole purpose of gathering together such supernatural beings. The initial members consist of the mute bookworm Yuki Nagato, the timid but voluptuous Miharu Asahina, and the polite and ever-smiling Itsuki Koizumi. By the end of this first volume, Kyon quickly finds out that these seemingly "helpless victims" of Haruhi's are actually members of secret organizations-both futuristic and alien-with the single aim of keeping watch over Haruhi Suzumiya as she is the pinnacle of some major calamity on the horizon...

Kirkus Reviews
The welcome trend of translating popular Japanese series into English continues with this first of ten in Tanigawa's popular series. Completely normal high schooler Kyon narrates as his boredom is smashed by a strange and beautiful girl. Haruhi Suzumiya isn't interested in anyone other than "aliens, time travelers, sliders, or espers." As "ordinary humans" don't interest her, Haruhi forms a school club, the S.O.S. Brigade, with a mission to find the extraordinary, conscripting Kyon and three other club members. But Kyon discovers that, unbeknownst to Haruhi, the S.O.S. Brigade is peopled with just the aliens, time travelers and espers it seeks. Kyon's narration is beautifully physical, effectively evoking a manga aesthetic of robot fights and giant monsters. The playfulness and visual joy of the genre, however, are accompanied by slapstick, dubious-consent sexuality. Manga and anime fans will find it familiar enough, but readers unfamiliar with the genre will be less comfortable with scenes-all played for laughs-of girls unwillingly dressed in sexy outfits and groped. (Science fiction. 14-16)

This was certainly a good manga version, although parts do vary from the original story bits, it is still as funny and as clever the other versions of the story. The story and characters are very interesting and you won't soon forget them after reading The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya!

Haruhi Suzumiya is a must have to otakus and anime hobbyists alike. The characters are unique, as well as the story line! It has it's share of seriousness...oh, who am I kidding? It's a hilarious manga, and you you read the manga you should surely watch the anime as well. Haruhi, you are just amazing!

This is a great read! This book is a good start for any new manga readers or anyone who just has some spare time and wants to read a good "comic". Its mainly about a high school setting with some paranormal backdrop. I highly enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone.

This was a good first volume. It seems that the characters have been introduced. The school club has been established. Haruhi is crazy, but I cannot wait to see what she does next. She has unrealistic expectations for poor Kyon. I feel bad for him, but it makes me interested in the future for his character.
