Gr 3-5 A book that should be a hit with ``Ramona'' (Morrow) fans. Eight-year-old Melanie loves to have fun, but sometimes she goes too far. From starting a worm war at recess, tying everyone's shoelaces together, convincing her classmates that she is a witch, and eating all of the samples at the cheese shop to not giving her parents the four notes that the teacher sent home, she is sure to amuse readers, most of whom will appreciate the humor and relate to the story. Melanie; her mother, a syndicated TV critic for six newspapers; her father, a contractor who loves to shop for bargains; a four-year-old sister; and a seventh-grade sister with typical boyfriend problemsall present a warm, realistic picture of family life. The marker drawings have an energetic quality that should appeal to young readers. Alice R. Arnett, Greenwood Elementary School, Louisville, Ky.
