In 1875, General William Tecumseh 'Cump' Sherman published the first edition of his memoirs. They were controversial to say the least. Eleven years later he published his second edition, with two new chapters, and appendixes. This simply made sure that the memoirs remained controversial. Even today there seems to be no middle ground. He is either a great general, or an overrated one. There have been many biographies and books about Sherman the man, but none are as rewarding as these memoirs.

"I hate newspapermen. They come into camp, pick up their rumors and print them as facts. I regard them as spies, which, in truth, they are. If I killed them all, there would be news from hell before breakfast!"
