Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristin R. Harris
Masks have been prized for centuries and their appeal does not waver. My only disappointment with this publication is that there are only five masks. Each spread includes a pop-up 3D mask from one of five cultures with relevant text and images. The cultures represented are the PreColumbian, the Iatmul of New Guinea, the Igbo of Nigeria, 16th century Europe, and 18th century Japan. The masks, authentic reproductions on heavy cardboard, are designed to be carefully removed from the book and are ready to wear. A photograph of the real mask is underneath the removable mask. Supplemental material includes a world map and country map, photographs of other artwork of the culture and descriptions of customs. The great diversity of the masks and the cultures is exemplified by the Igbo mask, which is worn by men dancers who imitate the graceful movements of women to praise their beauty. The women respond with presents and appreciation. This is art education at its finest-lessons in geography, cultural history, three-dimensional form and color. This is a handsome book that anyone can enjoy.
