Anyone living in Southwestern cities like San Diego, El Paso and Phoenix stands a good chance of being exposed to a variety of Mexican and Mexican-American music (which ranges from contemporary tejano and banda to more traditional mariachi and ranchero). Strictly traditional and entirely acoustic, Mexico! celebrates the south-of-the-border folk songs that have been a part of Mexican culture for generations. "El Mayor De Los Dorados" (an ode to Pancho Villa), "Coplas De Arcadio Hidalgo" and other classics heard on this CD have graced many Mexican events over the years. If one notices some similarity between songs like "El Sacamandu," "El Chande" and "El Diablo" and Afro-Cuban music, it's because they are examples of son -- one of the forms that has influenced salsa. (Of course, Mexicans and Cubans have very different approaches to the son.) A cohesive, good-spirited band, Los Folkloristas spare no passion on this solid effort.
