Overview

Mezmerize

These Armenian-American agitators have, over the past several years, brought difficult listening further into the mainstream than practically any band in rock history. With this, the first of two discs to detonate this year, SOAD continue down that road, taking listeners on a ride dominated by more hairpin turns and sudden jolts than a day's worth of roller-coaster rides. The disc's lead single, "B.Y.O.B.," sets the tone both musically -- with its crazy-quilt mix of Balkan thrash and slinky disco -- and politically. Not surprisingly, Mezmerize is largely given over to screeds of social commentary in which songwriters Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian take on both the military-industrial complex, as on the feral "Cigaro," and the pop culture cult of personality -- hit most effectively on "Lost in Hollywood," which layers ethereal guitar lines with vocals straight out of a Byzantine church. SOAD set the experimentation bar plenty high with Toxicity, but manage to clear it with regularity here, particularly on the dizzyingly layered "This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm in This Song" and the purposefully ugly "Violent Pornography," which jerks along on waves of anguished guitar contortions. Packing 11 songs into 36 minutes, Mezmerize doesn't offer much in the way of a breather, but it's a stimulating and effective way to build up listening stamina.

To the idiot that wrote that SOAD do not have intelligent lyrics, you are sadly mistaken my friend. They're music is indeed hard to interperate to the untrained ear, but once you get it, you'll hear songs about bad politics, retarded sex crazed Americans, wool being pulled over our eyes, etc. Amazing stuff.

Well, i will always have a space in my heart for toxicity, i think that this album is one of the better of SOAD's other albums.

When I bought this album I expected more than songs where they just talk about getting high off of cocaine and stupid things like that. Once I started to actually listen to some of the songs, I realized how stupid it actually was. The Lyrics and vocals...EVERYTHING was really horrible. Dissapointing that system of a down would actually make another album that was so stupid!!! I'd think that actually realize how horrible their albums were and for once make a decent album (which I'm sure they could do if they only used their heads). I mean who really likes stuff that they do in this album?? This is just another album for those obsessed MTV watchers just trying to be cool. Wouldnt recommend to anyone EVER!!

I got this CD a day before it was released in stores because I pre-ordered it and haven't stopped listening to it!!! This is one of the best CD's I've heard in a long time. I'm really looking forward to Hypnotize (the second part of this double album) coming out. I highly recommend buying a copy.

I also thought this album would be so much better than it was, however, I had to force myself to listen to the majority of it. Very disappointed, expected so much more from them.

This cd is one of the best metal albums that i have heard in years. Its fast paced in your face metal.it starts off with the intro wich gets you ready for the rollercoaster ride that your about to experience then the opening riffs of BYOB start and WOW your instantly blown away, then its followed by Revenga personally my favorite track off the whole album the lyrics and the vocals are awesome in this track its so good!!!!.Then cigaro a good track too i know many people out there think the lyrics are dumb but its supposed to be symbolic of America and its mentality really good track. Then theres radio/video a really odd song but really good you'll be addictive to this track trust me!.Then the songs that follow such as the cocaine and violent pornagraphy are really catchy tunes the guitars and drums ,vocals and the lyrics are perfectly the executed on these songs that you'll be singing or humming or headbangigng to this songs wherever you are. Then Question, one of the best tracks of this album or probably one of system of a downs best track is so well composed that you cant help but apprecciate the talent of this band.SAD STatue is probably my least favorite track of this album dont get me wrong this song is not bad at all but compared to the other songs off this album is my least favorite. Then finally theres the Hollywood songs theyre really excellent especially Old School Hollywood it has a bit of a techno feel to it .Overall this cd is an excellent outstanding cd it shows the bands ability to be creative and the ability to change ..just excellent!!!!

This is--in my opinion--the best System of a Down album to date. I loved nearly every track on this album and listened to the entire CD over and over again. Now. For those who think that SoaD's music sucks because their lyrics "are stupid", please understand that many times they are MEANT to be stupid. One song starts off with "My c**k is much bigger than yours"; another ends in "Don't eat the fish". That these lyrics aren't ground-breakingly intelligent doesn't mean that the people who wrote them are stupid. They are meant to make you laugh, to make you think. Another thing I can't stand is the fact that some people say "oh, they're horrid, they sing about cocaine" just because one of the songs on the album--ONE--is titled "This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm on This Song". The song isn't about cocaine, okay. Please actually -listen- to it before making your sweet little judgments.

This album is excellent... not only because of it's headbang-inducing guitar thrashing and crazy, sudden pace changes, but because of it's lyrics... they really are saying something big (OK, excluding 'Cigaro'), especially with the moving and disturbing finale, 'Lost In Hollywood'. This is one of my favorite albums of the year, and I truely can not wait for the follow-up. Pick this up now, and I guarantee you will be lost in the haunting lyrics and the beauty they bring to the music.

Amazing album, but most of the other guys writing , I bet don't even listen to the lyrics . I do like the band a lot, but I like a lot of other bands much more like Nirvana, and Tool. Tool I think is better than SOAD because Maynard James Keenan (Lead singer) has better vocals than Daron Malakian, and Tool sings about better topics than SOAD. I still think SOAD is an awsome band cause their songs are so energetic, and amusing to listen to.

System yet agains puts out a great cd! With a singles like B.Y.O.b. and Cigaro how can you not resist this band? System brings the heavy metal sound along with a unique sound that i have only heard from them. Mezmerize proves that a heavy metal band can still put an album on the charts.

i was really disapointed with this album. its ok at first but after about the second time u listen to it it gets old and boring. evrybdy seems to like B.Y.O.B. but i think that song definetly gets old fast. I think this cd had potential but didnt follow through.

SYSTEM HAS OUT DONE THIS TIME. THIS NEW ALBUM IS THE BEST ALBUM EVER! I DON'T HAVE A FAVORITE SONG BECAUSE THERE ALL SO GOOD! I RECCOMEND THAT YOU BUY THIS ALBUM WHEN IT COMES OUT NEXT WEEK. P.S. CHEERS TO DARON MALAKIAN FOR SCREAMING THE F WORD ON SNL.

System of a Down since 2001 have been a source of unique rap/rock elements all their own. Mezmerize is no different. With extra surprises such as Daron's screechy vocals along with the punk/grunge guitar work and swift bass beats, this tops alot of the new metal of 2005. Some think this album is loads of heavy garbage and a cliched genre. But the antics of SoaD are so great, they don't let any true fan down. To some this is one of the best albums out there (to people who think every new album is the best ever). From B.Y.O.B. and on live a disc of rap metal and twisted hardcore. Well polished and an interesting CD case. I give this piece of work 4 stars. It's solid, but not perfect.

Some serious growth on the part of the band. They are definitely drawing from some diverse influences. I see a little bit of everything from Slayer to Mike Patton era Faith No More and Mr. Bungle. Its notably different from their other releases. Some songs are mediocre, but overall, I enjoyed this release. I like the Daron Malakian (guitar player) directed approach.

Good, catchy album. All the songs have been playing through in my head for a few days now. My problem is that the bass on this album is non-existant 1/2 the time, and the drum beats during the chorus are always the same. The big improvement was the two vocalist idea. My favorite track has to be Lost in Hollywood or Violent Pornography. Ignore BYOB, that's the standard terrible single song.

This CD is pretty much the best CD in a while , and defininitely the best of 05. all the songs are hard rocking and the folow up shouldnt be dissapointing either, as i have heard the song hypnotise on thier mezmerize tour and it is amazing.

This album was a major disapointment. I figured theyd make a better album than the last but instead they made one that was even worse than steal this album. Some of the songs are just plain annoying. Like violent pornagraphy gets old as soon as you start to listen to it. Plus, their so called hit B.Y.O.B. is another song that gets old really damn fast. I think system of a down needs to really think before they make their next album and think about righting better lyrics and better music.

O.k I don't know what is wrong with you people but "Mezmerize" is one of the best albums I have heard lately. And I am not easily impressed. It is different which is great, because I get tired of the same old garbage over and over again. If it really sucks then why did it debut at #1 on the charts? It DEBUTED not climed into the top spot. The songs are awesome, the lyrics are kick rear. I highly recomend getting it, you have to hear it yourself.

My dad got me this CD and I didn't know what to really expect of it, because I had never even heard of these guys. On my first listen, I fell in love with this band. The music is just out of this world! The singing is amazing and you hear nothing like it anywhere else, their lyrics sound like complete nonsense but if you listen close enough they have deeper meanings, the drums are "whoa", and that goes for the awesome guitars. System of a Down is a heavy metal band that has a very unique sound you hear nowhere else. So, if you like System of a Down or heavy metal, or just have an open-mind to music in general, then I recommend this CD. Listen to the samples, and if you like what you hear, then BUY IT: YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!! (I sure wasn't.)

Since i bought this album i just cant see myself taking it out of my cd player(I just can't!!).The music is so raw and unique that you cant help but loving this album. And when you try to listen to another cd you view it as plain and boring because this cd will have a guaranteed impact on your music taste.I love System of a Down!!!!!!

Im really amazed with the album, it made my jaw drop. I love it! so you should really check it out if you haven't. These guys are original and amazingly talented, i haven't heard anything i didn't enjoy by them.

Everything is excellent about this cd. I belive Serj Tankian is one of the Best vocalists in metal, because he can sing to the heaviest and most insane riffs (BYOB), haunting, slow, and melodic pieces that will give you chills (Lost in Hollywood), and everything in between. This is one of the few cd's where I can listen to every track without skipping any, but my favorite is probably Question! because it is probably the best of Serj's vocal performances (on this cd), with guitar riffs that make it ten times more beautiful and and powerful. The lyrics are all excellently written (ok, maybe not Radio/Video, but oh well), and they all have have great meanings behind them. Politics is the main theme in the lyrics. Two of the greatest sons dealing with this are Cigaro, a song about rivalry between world leaders hiding behind classic SOAD insanity, and Sad Statue, which tell how America is going down because of "a generation that didn't agree."

i've been a rock and rap fan since the day i was born. i've listened to the greatests from jimmy hendrix to metallica now i have to say since the day system of a down came out, they are now a member of the greatest rock bands ever.
