Michael Hopkins: 1976-2006
The architecture of Michael Hopkins defies easy stylistic categorization. Often hybrid creations, the buildings juxtapose strongly contrasting elements, yet remain loyal to a strict code of truth to materials and honesty of expression. His architectural research can best be summed up in the expression “form follows material“: materials are employed investigating the deeper meanings of their nature renewed in new languages and forms which rewrite the grammar of architecture and contemporary building. This volume traces Hopkins's development from his early years in the mid-1970s to the present, featuring works such as The Lords Cricket Grounds, Braken House, Glyndebourne Opera House, the Interactive Museum, Jubilee Campus and the new English Parliament. With 30 buildings and projects featured in full-color photographs and complemented by architectural plans, sketches, drawings, and an informative essay.
