Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This is a simple biography about the current ice skating sensation, Michelle Kwan. The book is chronologically organized, so that the reader is taken from Michelle's early days as a five-year-old skating student to her most recent win at the 2000 World Championship. The reader learns about the family sacrifice to support Michelle's sport, as well as her personal struggle to qualify for the Olympics in 1998. There are color photographs throughout the book and a resource section at its end listing useful addresses, web sites and additional reading. This is an acceptable first time biography for the young reader. However, it does not tell any stories that connect the reader to the heart of Michelle Kwan. This lack of intimacy makes it simply an elaborate chronology of events and accomplishments. It is part of the "Sports Heroes" series. 2001, Capstone Press, $21.26. Ages 7 to 10.
