~Reviewed by FRANCESCA & posted at Under the Covers Book Blog The Killer Instincts series has had my attention from the beginning because it’s not just about a group of badass military (or ex-military) men out to save the day. There’s also a group of assassin women. Nothing gets me more than a badass heroine and this series usually has that in spades. Add to that the great suspense element, tightly written plot and one of my favorite cast of characters in the romantic suspense world right now and you have a winner. We met Isabel Roma a while back and saw her first interactions with Trevor. The attraction was there but the timing wasn’t right. Trevor had lost his wife and was devastated. In a very dark place and ready to give up on life. Isabel was that light that dragged him through that time when they had to work together on a case. Things got a bit more heated between them in the previous book when time had started the heal Trevor. In MIDNIGHT GAMES the risks and stakes are higher. Noelle’s team is called in to help find Jim and then bring down who they thought was a human trafficker. They weren’t ready for the surprises and twists this story had prepared for them. I know I wasn’t! There were so many things I didn’t see coming. Just when you think they will be safe everything goes to hell. And just be prepared for some loses. I was kept on my toes the whole time. Isabel and Trevor were at a point in their relationship that they were ready to admit their feelings for each other. The relationship development was just getting past those barriers they both built around their hearts and letting the other in emotionally. I really enjoyed them as a couple in and out of the bedroom and the added bonus is they work great together! Then there’s the side characters. Without going into the guys….I’ll just say that I need to have Noelle’s book. I wasn’t expecting what was going on with her, meaning who she’s having an affair with. The bit of background info we got was just a teaser. I know her story is going to be an intense roller coaster and I’m ready for it. *ARC provided by publisher

We have been watching as Trevor’s interest in Isabel has brought him back to life and Isabel’s interest has brought her back from edge of the abyss that life has led her to. One of Nicole chameleons, Isabel excels at undercover work. She hides behind her various personas and Trevor insists on breaking through to the real Isabel. For a woman who is cool under fire this scares her as nothing else does. Trevor wasn't able to save his fiancé how can he risk his heart once more with a woman who purposely puts herself in harms way? This is romantic suspense at its best. Action adventure, and romance this series just keeps getting better with each installment. This reads like a modern day episode of Mission Impossible. I can’t wait for the next installment.

Action and romance

Action and Suspense: MIDNIGHT GAMES is the third installment of Elle Kennedy’s contemporary, adult Killer Instincts romantic suspense series focusing on an elite group of highly trained men and women-mercenaries for hire. This is Trevor Callaghan and Isabel Roma’s storyline-one that has been building since book one. MIDNIGHT GAMES can be read as a stand alone but for cohesion and character history I suggest reading the series in order. Told from several third person points of view MIDNIGHT GAMES, advancing the series approximately six month, finds ex Ranger and head of the mercenary team Jim Morgan missing. Left in charge, Trevor sets into motion a plan, with the help of Noelle’s collection of female assassins including the woman who has stolen his heart, to locate their missing leader. The team will soon find themselves on the receiving end of a vicious and deadly attack leaving several dead, a grieving widower, and Trevor and Isabel fighting their attraction to one another. Going into hiding isn’t possible, when the team must search for the man in charge. The relationship and attraction between Trevor and Isabel began in book one MIDNIGHT RESCUE wherein a grieving Trevor is unable to come to grips with the death of his fiancée. Guilt finds Trevor taking on suicide missions where he hopes to be on the receiving end of a sniper’s bullet. Time and thoughts of Isabel Roma have Trevor looking towards the future but Isabel is determined to keep away. Their latest assignment will find Isabel on the prowl with a mysterious casino owner, and Trevor fighting the urge to jump in and save the day. Once again, like the previous two storylines, MIDNIGHT GAMES is an ensemble story that not only focuses on the current premise but sets into motion upcoming storylines. There is a definite history between Noelle and Jim, and Derek aka D is not the man we believe him to be. We are also introduced to Juliet and Paige-two of Isabel’s teammates, as well as all the introduction of a potential new team of mercenaries-currently known as Team B. The world building continues to focus on the mercenary –for-hire premise as Jim Morgan’s team of retired SEALS, Rangers, Marines and soldiers take on the dirty jobs where crossing the line is all in a day’s work. From drug lords to human trafficking; murder for hire and undercover operations, nothing is off limits in the Killer Instincts series. There is violence and murder; kidnappings and threats but the graphic details are limited and mostly implied. The reader is pulled into an action packed, suspense filled story where the past meets the present but not before travelling a road of twists and turns. Elle Kennedy teases with her slow reveal of character development, background histories, and everyone’s connection to everyone else. There is plenty of tension you can cut with a knife.

Now that I’ve finished binge-reading Elle’s entire Killer Instincts series, I can finally sit down and write some thoughts about each of them. I was so obsessed with these books that I couldn’t even think about taking the time to write a review before jumping right into the next book. Six books, one week. Not too shabby. ;) When Trevor and Isabel were first paired together for a mission during Midnight Rescue, I pegged these two as a fantastic couple. Unfortunately, it wasn't mean to be at the time. Between Trevor's past and Isabel being closed off, I knew it would be a tough road for these two. I just hoped they would be as explosive together as I hoped. (Spoiler alert: they totally were. And I loved every minute.)  Trevor was one of the first guys in this series that I really connected with. His past was sad – the death of his fiancée impacted him in a very real way. He was a completely broken man when we met him in Midnight Rescue. I wasn't sure he would be able to pull himself out of it either. He was reckless and wanted to die. Guilt is powerful and it had totally wrecked him. But even with all that in his head, there was a spark between him and Isabel when they very first met and it only grew stronger the more they worked together. Holy sexual tension. (Which, of course, added more to his guilt because he was thinking about someone other than Gina in this way, but it also led to his healing.) Isabel was a tough character to connect with for awhile. She was so used to being in disguise and locking down all her emotions, I'm not even sure she knew who she was and what she wanted. She was attracted to Trevor, no doubt, but she also wasn't ready to explore the possibility of more. She's a kind woman underneath that tough exterior, but much like Trevor, her past continues to haunt her. Her issues with her father shaped her present. After things came to a boiling point between her and Trevor in Midnight Alias, she got scared and ran. Darn it. *shakes fist*  Midnight Games picks up five months after Midnight Alias. Isabel has been deep undercover and completely unreachable. And believe me, Trevor's tried to reach her. She knows she hasn't exactly been fair to him, so she returns to the compound to explain things to him and see if they can work things out. But, nothing can ever be easy. The compound is attacked shortly after her return and suddenly the romance isn't the main storyline any longer. The compound has been destroyed. Life was lost in the attack. The head of Trevor's team, Morgan, is missing. Noelle returns to help them find Morgan. Isabel goes undercover again and Trevor finds himself having to let go of his protective instincts for the good of the mission.  This book is full of ALL THE ACTION and suspense. It also did a great bit of justice to both Trevor and Isabel's stories – both together and separately. I was lukewarm to Isabel going in, but by the end I was a huge fan. She was a strong woman, the type of heroine I love to read about. Sure, there were times I wanted to yell some sense into her (which, you know, would've ended rather poorly for me) but I got her. Trevor was golden from the start and I loved him as much at the end as I did the beginning. I loved how much progress he'd made. And it probably goes without saying that I love love loved him and Isabel together. The  sexual tension was palpable and when it finally all came to a head, it was HOT.  At the time I read this book, it was the one I was waiting on. The story I had to have. After two books chock full o' sexual tension between Trevor and Isabel, I was ready for the payoff. I was ready to see them together. And I really enjoyed what I got with them. But, as is the norm with this series, I found myself shipping a new couple and desperately needing to find out what the real story was between them. It's that need for existing characters' storylines, combined with great writing, edge-of-my-seat suspense and hot and sexy romance, that led me to be so addicted to this series. It's definitely what made me throw my reading schedule out the window so I could binge on these.  And for the record? I regret nothing. I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.

Overall Rating:  4.90 Action: 4.5 / Emotion: 4.5 / Romance: 4.5 / Sensuous: 3.0 / Suspense: 4.0 // Laughter: 4 / Giggle: 0 // Tears: 2 / Teary: 2 Midnight Games: 4.90: This Romantic Suspense book is an un-put-down-able read.  Kennedy did a great job of keeping readers on the edge of their seats and tense with excitement as she told a story with plenty of unique twists that kept readers guessing. Hero: 4.50: Trevor "Trev" Callaghan: a hunky, alpha, but flawed hero, who not only shows his more than capable leadership skills, but also his strengths and vulnerabilities as he pursues the woman he has grown to love. Heroine: 4.50: Isabel "Izzy" Roma: a beautiful, strong-willed, compassionate heroine, who hides her vulnerabilities behind the personas she adopts in her line of work as an undercover operative. Secondary Hero: 5.00: Derek "D" Pratt: the sub-plot hero, whose presence is so powerful whenever he appeared on the pages of the book, that he almost supplanted Trevor's role as the number one male in this book. Secondary Heroine: 4.50: Noelle: the sub-plot heroine, a cold, emotionless leader of a group of female assassins, whose presence was so potent she could have stolen the show. Story Line: 4.00: Very creative, interesting, and entertaining story line in which Trevor and Isabel work through their various issues to find love, as they search for the man who hired mercenaries to destroy the Morgan compound and to try and find the missing Jim Morgan. Action: 4.50: Exciting well-described action scenes kept the story moving at a quick, steady pace. Emotion: 4.50: Kennedy created such an emotional connection to the cast of characters that it was impossible not to laugh and cry along with them. Romance: 4.50: The romantic awareness that existed between Trevor and Isabel was always prevalent in the background of the story. Suspense: 4.00: An edge-of-your-seat degree of suspense permeated the entire story as the characters tried to find {a} the bad guys who were trying to eliminate Morgan's Mercenaries and {b} what happened to Jim Morgan. Sensuous: 3.00: There was a great deal of sensuality, heat, and spice during the lovemaking scenes (and some definite heat during the sex scenes). Secondary Characters: 5.00: Kennedy does such a great job of including titillating details about her supporting cast members that it really brings these characters to life and adds an exciting flavor to the story.  Very fascinating, well-written supporting characters that really added to the enjoyment factor of the book (and the series) include: {1} Jim Morgan, {1} Kane Woodland, {3} Abby Sinclair, {4} Ethan Hayes, {5} Juliet Mason, {6} Sullivan "Sully" Port; {7} Liam MacGregor, {8} Sean Reilly, {9} Holden McCall, {10} Ed "Eddie" Marion Lassiter, {11} Tomas Meiro, {12} Renee Beaumont Meiro, as well as Isabel's personas, {1} Valerie Parker-Smith and {2} Paloma Dominguez-Martin. A more in-depth, detailed, spoiler-ridden review of *Midnight Games* appears at Wolf Bear Does Books.

Isabelle and Trevor have been moving around each other through the previous books so I was really excited for this book and Elle Kennedy  did not disappoint me.  They had a great story and the romance between them was done so well  makes me love this author even more.  Lots of action and nothing is ever easy for these two but you can't put the book down.  Can't wait for the next book in the series.

NUMBER OF STARS: 3 1/2 REVIEW: Ahh Trevor & Isabel’s story.  Words that come to mind are stubborn, determined and a never say die attitude.  This is what you get from these two.  They are both so stubborn and determined but for very different reasons.   Trevor is a man on a mission to get Isabel to see that there is way more to them then she thinks there is. And this time Trevor is not going to let her run away from him, no matter what he has to do.   Isabel may come off as tough.  She may be one of the best chameleons out there.  But the one thing that scares her to death is Trevor Callaghan. And for a very good reason, Trevor makes her feel. This was a good story.  Parts were a little slow.  But overall I enjoyed Trevor & Isabel’s story.  I am looking forward to the next book in this series.  Disclaimer:  I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.

200 pages down and so far just boring. Not enough action or suspense. I am just about tired of Trev, Izzy and Gina. When does the real story get started? I've had enough romance and am ready for some real a-- kicking to start! Very disappointed at this point.
