In Wall Street Journal bestselling author Melinda Leigh’s edgy new thriller, Louisa Hancock thought she was safe…but there’s a new killer in town.
When a mysterious package lands on Louisa Hancock’s doorstep, the Philadelphia museum curator can hardly anticipate the nightmare that’s about to envelop her. The package is addressed to her father—an expert in Viking culture—and inside is a ninth-century sword, a chilling thank-you note, and photos of two dead bodies in a tableau evoking a Nordic funeral. The gruesome images match a recent crime scene. But before the police can investigate the killer’s connection to Louisa’s father, Ward Hancock vanishes.
Sports bar owner Conor Sullivan wants nothing more than to spend his life with Louisa. Devoted and protective, he refuses to leave her side after her father’s disappearance. When a troubled young boxer he’s been coaching is suspected of the murders, Conor is pulled in even deeper. Desperate, Louisa and Conor take it upon themselves to find her father, but soon another ritualistic slaying makes it clear there’s a Viking-obsessed serial killer on the loose. And he has a new target: Louisa.

I can't get enough of Melinda Leigh's books. Every time I think that she can't get any better, she surpasses my expectations. This is the 4th book of a series and you can, of course, read this book as a stand alone but in my opinion you'll get more out of it if you read this as part of the series. It's so much fun watching familiar characters grow. One of my favorite things is the fact Melinda writes strong female characters. They don't spend a lot of time whining, wringing their hands, or waiting around for the hero to save the day. They are smart and underneath it all, they have a core of tempered steel. This book reaches out and grabs you from the beginning. It starts with a ritualistic killing, and a mysterious package addressed to Dr Ward Hancock but delivered to his daughter Louisa Hancock at the museum. This is just the start of a roller coaster ride of suspense. I am usually pretty good at guessing the bad guy, or unknown but familiar looking victim, but time after time I was wrong and never would have guessed the ultimate villain. If you are tempted, I say buy this book. It kept me up reading past my bed time and made me want to go back and re-read the previous three books in the series.
If you love a really great mystery, cozy or otherwise, then you should be racing to grab a copy of MIDNIGHT OBSESSION right away because it's well written, appropriately chilling and engrossing suspense that will leave you wanting more! I'm completely blown away by Ms. Leigh's writing and I've got to wonder what the research process is like when I read such a book that both creeps me out and leaves me in awe of the writer's skill. Fresh off a case that came too close to ending her life, all Louisa Hancock wants is stop living in fear and for life to return to normal. Unfortunately for her, her wish is not going to be granted any time soon. Her boyfriend, Conor's mentees are on the run after being pressured to join a local gang and being named as the suspects in a ritualistic double murder. In the midst of this storm, a mysterious package is delivered for Louisa's father at her work location, which contains items identified as Viking in origin and linked to the murders currently under investigation. Then her father is kidnapped and the only common denominator is the murders. How do the murders connect to the Louisa's father and the missing young men's issues with the gang? Another double murder alerts them to the fact that they have a serial killer on the loose and with the police overwhelmed with the non-stop crime spree, Louisa can't sit on the sidelines while her father is missing. Her involvement in the case only serves to put her on the killer's radar and soon Louisa is the ultimate prize in a game whose rules only a deranged mind knows. Conor would love to shield Louisa from any and all issues, but he knows she's not the kind of woman to hide away when her expertise is needed and with her father and the boys missing, Louisa won't stop until she finds them. Conor is not one to sit on the sidelines either and their extension of a helping hand to a family in needs makes his family the target of the gang. Vikings, gangs, murders, rituals - there is so much going on in this book and the skillful way Ms. Leigh ties all of this up is really amazing. The identity of the killer and the motive are not easily deciphered until the last page and there are no bread crumbs to provide any kind of clues but the end is an eye-opening moment where all those seemingly unconnected threads come together perfectly. This book focuses more on suspense than romance, so an avid romance fan may not find this very enjoyable, but if you're like me and don't mind the minimal romantic elements, then you are certainly in for a really great time with this book. This is my first book in this series and I can say that I didn't have any issues for not reading it in order. Disclaimer: I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book. Review will be posted at www.books-n-kisses.com . NUMBER OF HEARTS: 4 The last time we saw Conor and Louisa (book 3 Midnight Betrayal. Stop here if you don’t want any spoilers) they had just survived a close encounter with a killer. Now that things are finally settling down. They can get on with their life and live happily ever after. Wait what? That is not how a suspense series goes? That is not how Ms. Leigh operates? Are you sure? Okay, you are right. Ms. Leigh is about to drag Conor and Louisa down a very dark hole and make them question everyone around them. The question is will they be able to find their way out? And how much damage will be inflicted to those they care about? Another wonderful story by Ms. Leigh. I am in awe and a little scared of these suspense authors minds. Ms. Leigh does a great job of taking us on a journey of who done it. All the while leading us down one path after another. Never giving us time to stop and look at the actual route we are going until the end. I found myself wondering about the who the whole book. I got parts of it right but didn’t see the end coming. If you are a fan of romance suspense you really need to pick up a copy of Midnight Obsession. If you are new to romance suspense or new to Melinda you really should check out this series. I think you could read Midnight Obsession as a stand alone but I would suggest reading at least book 3 before so that you can have a better understanding of Conor & Louisa. Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley & Montlake Romance in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.
MIDNIGHT.OBSESSION is the 4th book in this series by Melinda.Leigh. Once again we have a taut thriller story to read, the tension doesn't leave till the end. Louisa's a curator, at the Philadelphia museum, when a package addresses to her father arrives. He is a Viking Culture expert, and was anxious to see what had come. But not the nightmare that was to unfold. Then when her father disappears, and it is someone with a Viking obsession.. Conor her new love interest, doesn't want to leave Louisa side. They are drawn into this web, can one figure out why, and solve. Before the next victim. Great thriller, doesn't disappoint. As all her books are great. Given ARC BY Net Galley for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
Amazing. Let me clarify I love this author. I rate most of her books 4 out of 5 because she is better than I like. I really like all her books. This one, phew, I started it. I knew the main characters from her previous books, it was like coming home. Thought, yup, she does it again, another 4. Then - wham! I understood the cover! Perfection. Then there was the no, oh, please no. And I knew who did it. But she even threw a twist in there! I do not reread many books. I don't watch movies twice. But I might have to read this one again, because I miss them already. I voluntarily reviewed this book, and would do so again!!
