An excellent coming of age story, somewhat reminiscent of Robert McCammon's novel, Boys Life. Occasionally veers into somewhat purple prose, but wind the reader over with a sympathetic narrator who is in way over his young head.

Midnight Rain by James Newman is a book I wish I'd read a long time ago. How I've missed it, I just don't know. If you're on the lookout for a genuine coming of age tale that will make you sleep with every light in the house on then this is it. But it now!

Midnight Rain was fast paced and well written and I do look forward to reading more by author (James Newman) in the future. The characterization is done very well and pretty much everyway the character reacts is pretty realistic. So much that I found myself saying man if I was 12 again thats exactly what I would do in that situation. It is a very fun read and a good coming of age fiction. Better in my opinion then some of the classics like Stephen King's The Body and Richard Laymon's Travelling Vampire Show. The only gruff I have with the novel is in some instances its not something you havn't seen in some movie somewhere in the past. The twists are interesting but some of them have been done. All and all though it was a fun read by an author that I look forward to reading more from in the future. Very talented story teller and pace setter.
