About the Author

Ian Hamilton Finlay (1925-2006) was a leading Scottish poet, artist, sculptor and gardener—his garden at Little Sparta has been described as ‘the only truly original garden created since 1945’. He was also a formidable controversialist and indefatigable correspondent.

Stephen Bann is a poet, historian and cultural critic. He was a friend of Finlay’s from his student days, and is now Emeritus Professor of the history of art at Bristol University.
