Overview

Posthumously published in 1904, here is the first systematic history of the American military—one which enormously influenced how the Army trained and deployed troops. About the Author

Emory Upton (1839-1881), as a general in the Union Army,  led infantry into the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse in Virginia in 1864, one of the bloodiest episodes of the Civil War. During the Civil War he proved to be an outstanding tactician, and in fact, was sent by Sherman to study European war tactics in order to improve the U. S. army.
