Overview

Mimi loves going to her mama's dance class. Especially when Mama lets her dance the adults! Mimi is so proud of herself her poise, her rhythmic movement, and her leotard. Until one day, another little girl comes to a dance class in a beautiful, fluffy pink tutu. Luckily, Mimi's mama, aunta and grandmothers have the perfect solution. An exquisite handmade lapa skirt will make Mimi shine and connect to her African heritage.

This book would be great to read if students were discussing African American culture and dance. This book consists of a lot of words that belong in the African American culture.

I really enjoyed this book by Tynia Thomassie. I thought it taught girls to go after what they love to do as well as embrace their culture. I loved at the end how Mimi's family made her the lapis. I think this sends a good message to children and that is to embrace their culture and differences and be proud of them.
