Mind of the Phoenixby Jamie McLachlan
Moira is a powerful empath, a psychic graced with the ability to read emotions and memories. Her skill is as much a curse as a gift, for in the harshly stratified city of Braxton empaths are slaves. Clever and beautiful, Moira has learned to rely on no one but herself. Determined to escape life as a concubine, she kills her master, and is imprisoned for the crime.
This could be the end for Moira, but the government has need of her skills. A mysterious serial killer known as the Phoenix has been planting suggestions in his victims' minds that drive them to murder and suicide. To gain her freedom, Moira partners with Keenan Edwards, a handsome young detective, to stop the killer.
Hunting the Phoenix will bring Moira on a more dangerous road than she imagined, forcing her to confront dark minds, twisted moralities, and her growing feelings for the detective.

I really enjoyed the book. It kept my interest throughout the story and I couldn't stop reading until it was finished.
Moira is nineteen and an empath . The world she lives in empaths are slaves. The Moira is bought by another empath who works for the elite and who makes her life hell. An empath can sense emotions , read others thoughts, and see their memories. Moira has special powers but keeps them to herself. her life is worse now than before. Eventually she could take no more and killed her master and is sentenced to die. Detective Keenan Edwards is on the path of the Phoenix who is a serial killer. Moira is freed if she will help Keenan with this case. Moira can’t trust especially men for no one has ever cared for Moira in her lifetime. But through it all Moira and the detective are very attracted to each other. The case is murder/ suicide there are letters found leading to the suicides the author of these letters must be found. I loved this story it was absolutely great and kept you riveted right to the story. You did not want to stop reading until the story had ended. Characters were awesome. Poor Moira i felt so bad for the way she had to live her life and the desperation she felt to kill her master as if she were a real person. But somehow she is still spunky and at times even makes me laugh while on this gruesome case. I did not like the detective at first as he was so mean to Moira as far as I am concerned she had already had enough of that but he did change as he got to know Moira. I hope there is a sequel I highly recommend I received an ARC of this story for an honest review..
This book epitomizes the phrase "leave them wanting more." I knew I was getting to the end, but I wanted it to last so much longer. Thankfully, there will be a sequel. There are some questions answered, but the important ones still linger. Moira has not had it easy as a slave and concubine. In the world she lives in, she hasn't had many choices and this has severely affected her outlook. Every decision she makes is colored by her past until she begins to trust and love (completely unbeknownst to even her) the detective she's paired with to solve the identity of the mysterious Phoenix. Like her dream weavers, the author constructs a world that feels real and is somewhere I can easily visualize. I am reminded of The Infernal Devices, a series I dearly love.
I'm really disappointed in this book. It started out fantastic, mysterious deaths, an empathy with nothing to lose, and a detective who despises her. But the best part was the idea of the Pheonix, placing thoughts in people's heads to kill and they don't even get it. Unfortunately the book crashed and burned, suddenly halfway through it stopped being about this fascinating plot and was just pages and pages of Moira and Keenan (the detective) staring into each other's eyes. Oh and another murder is introduced so most of the book has nothing to do with the original plot. Shame, it could have been great. Netgalley gave me a free copy of this book for my honest opinion.
Will the Real Phoenix Please Stand Up Spoiler alert…There is going to be another, O M Gee there HAS to be another! Please, someone anyone tell me there will be another!! I really enjoyed this read but first things first…Isn’t that cover magnificent? any who as I was saying, the author kept me engaged and gave just enough detail to want more and more. Before I knew it I was deep into the story and very committed to the characters. Definitely a vintage feel with the way the characters talk and the fact this takes place in the early 1900’s. However, there are several key elements that make the setting unlike any Ive read before. I’d say this is historical fiction meets urban fantasy…Vintage or not the world building was quite enjoyable. I recommend this for those that like mysteries and a lot of romantic tension. The Story, Moira…first let me say I love that name. Beautiful! Well she murdered her master but has been given a second chance. All she has to do is help catch a deadly empath sure no problem. The only thing is everyone hates her. The head detective despises her but he doesn’t understand the type of pain Moira has had to endure. As the story progresses so does the understanding of Moira and the decisions she has had to make. Is there resolution? Yes. It isn’t what you think but again the author has given us enough to spark the hunger for more. There is no cliffhanger but you will want more. The Characters, Moira broken lost and there is no escape in sight. She has been given another opportunity at life but what lies in her memories is a constant threat. She is dangerously teetering the cray cray line. Any moment I think oh oh this is it she’s going to crack…but she has been very strong and held fast to her word. I love her personality she is very sassy and flirty I look forward to seeing that without the demons of her past always creeping up to crush her joy. Her powers are so strong I have a feeling there is more to her than what the reader knows…I can’t wait to find out what that is. Keenan, the ever elusive detective he is so guarded and insulted that he has to work with a murder to catch an even greater murderer but he will do what it takes to find justice. I think he is surprised by Moira, it is clear these two find each other interesting but I want more! We don’t quite know his angle his past or his desires but I hope they line up with Moira’s. The End, as I mentioned there was resolution and no cliffhanger. So, all good there! The main story line is not resolved, thats why there just hast to be another installment. I have a feeling on the who’d done it so I look forward to finding out if I’m right or not. I enjoyed the execution of this book. It was more about the people their world and the understanding of dark emotions all vying for power. I hope the good guys win but I haven’t decided who “my” good guys are. If your into strong female leads then this is s a read for you! I know I’ll be following along closely. My Rating 4.0 Cell, Empath, Persuasion, Chief, Private Party, Phoenix, Door, Suspects, Hanging, Pigs Tail, Revolver, Revolting, Living arrangement, Touching Exchange…Passionate on the Brink filled stars.
