Mixed Plate: New and Selected Poems by Faye Kicknosway

Poet and visual artist Faye Kicknosway presents both new works and twenty-five years of celebrated verse and illustration in her latest volume, Mixed Plate: New and Selected Poems. The poems mine common speech, folklore, film, the grotesque and the ordinary with unapologetic candor and ferocious intimacy. They are a testament to the power of contemporary monologue, filled with surprising inversions and unique takes on the risk of opening the front door. Cutting musically to the quick of a situation, each is filled with surprise, horror and, as they add up, moral consequence.

Christopher Columbus was a thief.
Then he was a beggar.
Florida was a postcard to him.
That's as close as he got.
Jonah climbed in his window.
It was the size of a spoon.
He had a sailor's face,
all weeds and sticks that wouldn't burn.

What People are Saying About This

Andrei Codrescu

“Faye Kicknosway's materials arrive into her world rough and charged with real and potential powers… I have been reading her work for a long time and I'm greedily gluttonishly elated by the pleasure of having it all in a big book.”

William L. Fox

“Turning the body inside out with both mental and physical discourse/intercourse, Faye Kicknosway’s poems lead us first through desire and titillation then straight into despair before the reader finds any salvation. The journey will ravish you.”
