Reviewed by Stephen Fisher for Readers' Favorite Miya’s Assault by Fred D. Shutts is a fast paced science fiction novel about the exploits of the legendary Black Watch, an elite special forces unit in the distant future. During a mission to an old base, the unit is under attack from enemy soldiers, mutants and feral 'other folk' creatures. Fighting against near impossible odds, our group of heroes finds a room full of pods. The people inside the pods are all dead, except for one. Lieutenant Miya Harakuro, a larger than life Neko warrior who has been asleep for over 1000 years. Half human and half cat, the seven-foot tall Neko soldier was instantly adopted by the Black Watch, as if she had been born to be a part of its destiny. With the help of Miya and the artificial intelligence, Abby, they were able to retrieve technology that had been lost for a millennia. Fred Shutts tells this tale through Miya’s Girl Friday, Bren Maxwell. His well developed characters that make up the Black Watch are close and treat each other as if they are family. A family that has the right mixture of  teasing, bickering and a bond of loyalty that comes from shared experiences in constant life and death situations. With names like Ruin, Loki, Doom and Fang, they give Maya the nickname Big Cat. Once she joins the crazy, like minded, elite fighting force, they are sent on missions into hostile areas where the odds against them are staggering. Their success depends on faith in themselves and each other. Miya’s Assault is imaginative, full of action, with witty dialog that will have you falling in love with its characters. Mr. Shutts delivers a brilliant masterpiece that I just couldn't get enough of.

Reviewed by Savannah Edelen (Teen Reviewer) for Readers' Favorite Miya’s Assault by Fred D. Shutts is an incredible book that goes deep into the realms of science fiction and new technology. Set in a time in the future where humans have left Earth to live in space and Earth has been ravaged by war, people must fight to defend their new nations. Sorrow Earth, as it is now called, is a vast land that holds the remains of civilization. Miya is a Neko, half cat/half human, who was born and raised on Sorrow Earth. She was there from before the collapse of everything and was put into stasis so that she and her family of Nekos might one day come back to save the galaxies. But will she accomplish what she was born to do? Or will she die in the process? I really liked this book. I am not the biggest fan of science fiction but this book had me not only loving it, it also had me reading it in every spare moment of my time. I loved Miya’s fierce and protective personality and how well she was portrayed throughout the book. I love how well Miya was able to connect with her team and how they became like a family to her. She was different from everyone, but still managed to worm her way into their hearts and get along with everyone. To top it off, the book cleverly inserted little details here and there that showed foreshadowing. It made the book an interesting complement of puzzles that you had to continue reading to solve. I cannot wait to read another book like Miya’s Assault by Fred D. Shutts.

Reviewed by Katelyn Hensel for Readers' Favorite Lieutenant Miya is one of the fabled Neko soldiers renowned for their skill in battle and deadly prowess. She wakes up in an unknown land, which used to be home, but now centuries later it's known as the age of Sorrow Earth. Fighting for her life against the unknown and struggling to put together the fragments of understanding she gleans from this new world, Miya soon takes up command to try to snuff out evil. Miya's Assault is the first book in the Black Watch Chronicles written by Fred D. Shutts, and I am hoping for many many more books to come.  This pseudo dystopian, science fiction, action packed adventure is one of the coolest things that I've read this year. There are little instances where history comes into play (as in our history) which lead to a very enriched and full-bodied story full of depth and complexity. Miya herself is a kick butt heroine that everyone could get behind and countless young women could stand to envy and embody.  The blended genres work very well in this piece, and Fred Shutts should be commended for his use of multiple tropes and themes from all the different varieties of genre. You can't really pin this book down, but that's okay. It's different and flies free on its own as an action packed adventure for both guys and girls. Miya's Assault should be on your list for fun-filled books to fill up on.

Reviewed by Paul Johnson for Readers' Favorite The year is 4319 AD. Two thousand years before, an alien force devastated Earth. The survivors were able to rebuild somewhat and over the next two thousand years Terra was broken down into factions - the two major ones, the mighty city-state of Sorovaste and its arch enemy, the European Empire. In a mission to recover long lost technology, Sorovaste sends their special operations commandos of the Black Watch to the devastated Japan. Here they must combat dreaded dragons, mutants, and gigantic rat-like creatures.  The European Empire also wants technology for themselves and launches a devastating attack. While the two world super powers are fighting for control, a squad of Black Watch troopers finds a long deserted base underneath Mt. Kenashi. What they find is way more than they could ever have imagined. Lieutenant Miya Harakuro is the last of the famed Neko soldiers, a half human/half feline species bred to be soldiers. When she is woken from stasis, she is quickly brought into the combat where her skills save the day. However the peace doesn’t last long when a new alien force attacks. Lives hang in the balance as Miya and the Black Watch undertake a dangerous mission in the heart of a raging battle with the fate of the world hanging in the balance.  Miya’s Assault: The Black Watch Chronicles Book 1 by Fred D. Shutts is a pure adrenalin rush from page one. If action-adventure and science fiction is your thing, you won’t be disappointed. The author has developed an interesting and diverse cast of characters. The plot is simple but well developed. The story is very detailed but moves along at a good pace to keep the reader’s interest. Overall, I liked this book very much.
