Royal Palms Hotel and Casitas, Phoenix, Arizona
Royal Palms Hotel and Casitas is an intriguing and intimate hideaway. Constructed in the late 1920s as a private mansion, this hotel brings a bit of the Mediterranean to the Sonoran desert. Graceful palm trees reign over the entrance to this convenient, yet secluded, place halfway between the Biltmore area and downtown Scottsdale. The casitas and guest rooms are light-filled and extraordinary. Rich details, jewel tones, and unique accents create a wondrous ambience. Fireplaces, balconies, and patios complete the experience. Great care is paid to the grounds, where fragrant blossoms, stone walkways, and well-tended courtyards are de rigueur. Set against a backdrop of the Camelback Mountains, the pool is dreamy, and the spa induces a trancelike state with its wonderful offerings. The Bar and Cigar Room are ideal for lingering, but the pièce de résistance is T. Cook's (see also T. COOK'S), where the rustic elegance is a perfect setting for the award-winning cuisine. 116 rooms, 1-2 story. D $365; each additional $25; under 18 free. Service charge $18/day. Check-out noon. TV; cable (premium). Bar 11 am-midnight; Fri, Sat to 1 am. Room service 24 hours. Restaurant. Exercise room, spa. Pool; poolside service. Tennis. Business center. Totally nonsmoking.
