This short piece follows a restoration artist who arrives in the Vatican to work on frescoes during renovations in the mid 1980s. While there has been mild controversy over the restoration of the famous ceiling that was done back then, little has been said about the other activities that took place in the walls of the holy city, and that may be continuing to this day.

Tal certainly has a unique talent of describing moments and feelings that strike at the heart of metaphor. Sprinkled throughout his short story are moments of clarity and very relatable. His imagery is consistent and what really struck me was the notion of being in love from afar, but the closer you get, the more disenchanted you become - which is the character's strength and weakness. This is the kind of story that requires multiple readings to fully appreciate!
