A streamlined modern aesthetic is apparent in the emphasis on the clean shapes of furniture, well thought-out storage, understated colour schemes and a consistency of materials throughout a space. But, while there are stainless-steel worktops, tiled walls and glass panels, comfort is ever present too -- the natural tones of wood and sisal, seating that is plump and inviting, cosy wool blankets and soft, textured linen.
It is this combination of cool with a softened edge that creates the look and signals a less rigorous more realistic style of interior. Adaptability and ease are essential ingredients. These are spaces that are attractive but also practical, and very much for living in.
Katherine Sorrell examines the demands we make of our homes -- spaces in which to entertain, work and relax -- and discusses options for improving the suitability of our environment to these needs. She explains why the rooms shown are as successful as they are, and suggests alternatives to materials and styling elements to recreate the effects.
