I have always had problems with writing books written by people who are not masters of the craft. Koch, a fine writer, is perfectly aware of this problem and crams the book with the advice of the masters. Toni Morrison, Nabokov, Faulkner, Tolstoy and on and on all manage to be represented in this book. What is more, Koch manages to be supportive, encouraging and practical to beginners and seasoned writers. This is a fantastic book. I read it in an endless cycle, once I finish it I just turn to the beginning again and keep it constantly on my night stand for any time that I am feeling like the work isn't, well, working. Do yourself and your writing a favor. Get this book.

If you want to write, go write right now. If you want to learn more about the craft of writing, read this book. It offers the most comprehensive advice ever for writers, including quotes from many other authors and insights into the obstacles they face. This book will debunk common writing myths and empower you to write and /finish/ that manuscript.

This book reads as if you were getting a private class from Stephen Koch. It is very didactic and comprehensive. Interesting way how the author interspersed the advice from renowned masters of the craft throughout the book. A definite must read for aspiring writers.

I paid for a book and received an 18 page excerpt that was fairly useless--just a few anecdotes about etching but little in the way of instruction on craft. Don't waste your money, at least on the nook version. Very deceptive.
