Mojave Rescue by Tanya Stowe

COMPROMISED SECURITY

Electronics engineer Drina Gallagher has created a powerful weapon that will protect soldiers’ lives—and it’s put her own at risk. Kidnapped and locked in a desert shack, she’s desperate to stop her plans from getting into enemy hands, but whom can she trust? Especially when even the security expert who rescues her isn’t who he seems. Forced to blow his cover after spending two years infiltrating a black-market ring, CIA agent Cal Norwood blames Drina’s recklessness, though he admires her courage. And while his mountain cabin offers temporary refuge, protecting Drina means outwitting— and defeating—a relentless foe determined to seize the weapon plans at any cost.

In “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, Steven Spielberg inverted the typical thriller storytelling pattern. Instead of providing an introduction and back-story progressing into the action, he jumped right in with the action – not bothering with the introduction and back-story until the action heroes (and audience) needed a few minutes to catch their collective breaths. In “Mojave Rescue”, author Tanya Stowe successfully uses the same technique. While working late into the evening after her colleagues have all gone home, electronics engineer Drina Gallagher has had a breakthrough on her weapons project. She calls her boss and wakes him up to let him know. Unfortunately, it seems some others have already realized that Drina was on the cusp of discovery, and want her notes – and their author. Meanwhile, base security expert Cal Norwood is about to stumble onto the scene … The book is labeled “Inspirational”; the protagonists often discuss their relationship or lack thereof with the Supreme Being. Fans of this format should find the faith-based discussions to their liking, while those indifferent will not be distracted by it. (Absolute haters will NOT like it, but they are unlikely to pick up the book in the first place.) I was pleased by a couple of the side-benefits of this subgenre; I didn’t have to wade through erotic episodes that are occasionally inserted simply to attract other readers, AND it took me a long time to realize that even the antagonists weren’t cursing – and I found I didn’t miss EITHER the sex OR the language, thanks to Ms. Stowe’s writing skills. Recommended for all – except perhaps militant atheists who are offended by ANY mention of G-d. RATING: Five Stars p.s. It leaves me with an incredibly frustrated sensation when I manage to pick up a page-turner, but don’t have time to read in anything other than short shifts. It’s not Ms. Stowe’s fault – she did HER part by writing a page-turner …

Right from the first chapter of Mojave Rescue, Tanya Stowe sets the tension dial to ‘high’ and keeps it there until the very end. High-stakes, fast-paced, don’t-even-breathe action... Drina Gallagher is a bit of a puzzle as Cal determines, even as he’s torn between wanting to shake some sense into her or kiss her senseless. She’s naive in some ways, brilliant in others. She has a fierce strength that you wouldn’t guess upon first encountering her and … yes, while most of the danger chasing them throughout the book is the fault of her naivete … her bravery is not to be overlooked. Cal is the classic CIA undercover guy but his lauded focus scatters to the wind when Drina is nearby. I think that’s a critical part of his story, though – the realization that he ultimately isn’t in control at all. God is. And in the end, as an intense chase across the Mojave Desert (in the middle of a winter storm blowing through with a vengeance) culminates in a harrowing twist, God is all Cal can rely on anyway. Bottom Line: Mojave Rescue will keep you glued to the edge of your seat, hardly daring to breathe as the bad guys get closer and closer. It’s intense, suspenseful, and action packed. But tucked into the middle of the fight for their lives, Drina and Cal spare a little time for romance (hello, tension-driven kisses!) and a little time for grace. The kind that reminds us that it’s not all up to us… that the guilt we carry or the standards we can’t ever meet were never our burdens in the first place. They belong at the feet of the One who made us, who died for us, and who carries us now when we have reached the end of our our own abilities. All around, from start to finish, this is a great read with layered characters, a vivid setting, and stellar suspense! (I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)

If you are looking for an intense, almost nonstop action adventure story- you will find that and more in Mojave Rescue. This is a Love Inspired Suspense novel so I expected a few things to happen. What I got was a story that I could not put down and stayed up later then my bedtime and I got up very early to continue reading- (yawn, I am tired but it was so worth it). I liked how the author had the hero and heroine at odds throughout the story line, yet their goals were very similar. There was the gospel message that was relayed in a very genuine life-like way. There was the spark of romance that lit the way even in the most dangerous circumstances and the maddening fights these two had. And, oh the twists and turns that really took me by surprise. I have read this author’s work before and I would say she definitely can tell a story, especially ones with twists I was not expecting. This was a fun read. I received a copy of this novel for free. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

This was a fantastic debut novel! Author Tanya Stowe did a great job creating a compelling novel intertwining suspense with faith. Drina’s parents had raised her to be an intellectual and to scorn anything that wasn’t based on science and factual evidence. So she struggled with the idea of believing in God and that He cared about her life. Cal was raised in a family that valued family. fun and God, not necessarily in that order. It was his faith that motivated him in his job, well, that plus, well, I’ll let you read the book to figure that one out. The story was a journey of escape from the men intent on killing Drina and Cal, and a journey of running towards the God who forgives and saves. Though the Christian message was strong and clear, it was clearly a part of the story and did not appear to be forced or contrived, just the way it should be. I loved the humor behind Cal’s name – the way he looked just like Superman and had the heroic thing down pat. It was a very clever (and subtle) play on Kal-el, which took me a few chapters to pick up on. Very clever! Make sure to read the author’s note at the end of the story. Mojave Rescue. Often, I must let things settle for a day or two before I attempt to write the review. With this one, I had to write it Immediately. My, oh, MY, Tanya Stowe, sure knows how to spin an exciting tale! Enjoyed every page of this fast-paced story. The Characters were very believable, think they may even resemble some of my family. LOL Mojave Rescue is not your typical nerd rescue story. Yes, there is a nerd and a rescue. But every page is full of action and a deeper revelation. Motive and Truth. Drina is a beautiful intelligent Mathematician, dedicated to her work and finding ways to help soldiers fight this crazy new technical warfare. Cal is an agent trying to keep Drina's work out of the wrong hands. MS Tanya Stowe will keep you turning pages as the fast-paced events never seem to let up. She weaves some great Biblical truths along the way. I really loved this story Mojave rescue by Tanya Stowe. I give this book five enjoyable stars. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

"I'm saying that there's a difference between shame and guilt. Shame is God's tool. He uses it to make us uncomfortable, to make us examine what we've done. It shows us where we've made missteps, and how to bring those steps to the light and get back on the right path. Guilt is the tool of evil. Guilt makes hide things. Drives us to make mistakes, pushes us to make choices we would never make if not for the guilt." The above is just one of the great insights scattered throughout this book. This is the first book from Tanya Stowe that I have read and I am quite pleased to say that I've found another great author in the Love Inspired Suspense line. I will surely be following her future publications. Anyone who loves contemporary romantic suspense will thoroughly enjoy this book. The book is well-written with a fast-moving plot and detailed characters. The thread of faith is actually a strong current in the book and Cal does well to explain what a personal relationship with God looks like. I found the premise of the plot really interesting since I know nothing about cyber security or military arms development. Cal is an undercover CIA operative who's worked for over two years to infiltrate an illegal arms dealer stealing military weapons. Drina is an extremely talented software developer working on a high-security non-lethal military weapon. Trouble brews when Drina finally finishes ironing out the problems in the software; someone wants her program but wants her dead. Cal gets involved when he tracks down the kidnapped Drina but has to blow his cover. Death threats and car chases and gun shots follow everywhere they go.....and their sweet romance blossoms slowly as they spend time together. Cal is a loyal, resourceful, dedicated CIA agent who loves good music and food. His faith carries him daily and is the reason for the work that he does. Drina is a computer and numbers geek, hiding away from her past hurt and pain, driven by her work and for her work. She has been raised as an atheist and her past cannot let her reconcile with a loving and all-knowing God. Cal explains, "Faith is a lot like the way you described falling in love. First you have to make a conscious decision, a mental effort. You have to choose God. That opens the door. He takes care of the rest and the heart follows." I found this perspective thought-provoking. The suspense aspect of the story is quite palpable and the "bad guy" who was revealed at the end of the story surprised me. Quite a thrill ride. I received the book from the author/publisher via Celebrate Lit Tour. I was not required to write a favorable review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
