Monkey House is a memoir of the author's time spent in federal prison in the United States. He spent the last seven years of his sentence with Bernie Madoff, Jonathan Pollard, Nicky Scarfo, Carmine Persico, and a host of other well known criminals. FCI Butner was used for inmates with serious medical problems, was a mental health facility, and was used as a high profile, maximum security designation. In effect, the place was a giant Monkey House for the criminally insane. With Madoff and Pollard on CNN daily, the doings of Butner were very strange indeed. Griffith took five years in compiling the material for his memoir. It has been compared to Orange is the New Black--except Monkey House is nonfiction and the characters are known everywhere on the planet. What Netflix had done was to make up a prison soap opera, that had no basis in fact. Griffith takes the reader inside a world that few will ever know.
